EU lifts immunity of Polish MEP who denied Holocaust

The European Parliament has again lifted the immunity of far-right MEP Grzegorz Braun, paving the way for his prosecution in Poland on charges including Holocaust denial and vandalism of public symbols.

The decision came after Polish prosecutors filed a request in two separate cases, one of which related to his statements in a radio interview in which he claimed that the Auschwitz concentration camp and gas chambers were a “hoax.” Those comments were widely condemned and led to the launch of a criminal investigation, according to Ynetglobal.

Braun is also suspected of involvement in other incidents, including the destruction of Ukrainian, European Union and LGBTQ flags inside the Polish parliament. These cases add to a series of scandals that have caused strong reactions in Europe.

MEP Krzysztof Śmiszek stated that the decision to lift immunity was necessary, stressing that "anti-Semitism, violence and discrimination are not European values" and calling on the Polish authorities to act quickly.

This is not the first time Braun has lost his immunity. He has previously been involved in other incidents, including extinguishing Hanukkah candles with a fire extinguisher in the Polish parliament and allegations of assaulting a doctor.

The lifting of immunity does not imply guilt, but paves the way for a more in-depth investigation and possible indictment. The case is expected to be handled by the Polish judicial system and is considered one of the most sensitive current issues in the country.
