US President Donald Trump has held a press conference at the White House regarding the tragedy, where a military helicopter hit a passenger plane in mid-air while landing at Reagan Airport in Washington.

At the start, Trump asked for a minute of silence to be held for the victims and their families.

During his speech, Trump said America is in mourning, adding that this event has shocked many people from other nations involved in the plane crash. The president said there were Russians on the plane, but did not mention any other nationalities.

He has welcomed the search and rescue operation at all levels and says that the mission is now one of recovery as there are no survivors.

"We can only begin to imagine the agony you are all feeling. Our hearts are broken," Trump said.

He says he has ideas and theories about what happened, although he admitted that the investigation is still in its early stages.

Trump did not spare his political opponents, this time Joe Biden and Barack Obama. Trump said that the former President has hired mediocre personnel for air traffic control jobs that require superior intelligence.

"I put security first. Obama, Biden and the Democrats put politics first," Trump said.

"They're taking politics to a level that nobody has ever seen," Trump added. He says "their politics were terrible."

Trump further stated that it is not known what caused this collision, but added that a comprehensive investigation into the incident will be conducted.

"We will find out how this disaster happened and we will ensure that nothing like it happens again. The Federal Aviation Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board, and the U.S. military will conduct a comprehensive investigation. We will work tirelessly to understand what happened," declared the US President.

According to the President, the plane was performing all the operations properly, but adds that the helicopter had gone at an angle that was extremely bad. Trump then says that the helicopter had the ability to stop, climb, descend or turn.

“The turn he made was not the right one, of course,” he says.

Trump shows off one of the executive orders he signed upon taking office last week, which he says restores standards for air traffic controllers and others.
