What happened in the plane crash in the US?

Twice the control tower warned the military helicopter: “Do you see the CRJ?” Then again: “Pat 25, pass below the CRJ.”

A few seconds later, the collision occurred between the Blackhawk helicopter, which had three soldiers on board for routine training, and an American Airlines Bombardier CRJ-701 aircraft, coming from Wichita, Kansas, which was landing at Reagan Airport in Washington with 60 passengers and a crew of four.

The explosion was seen over the capital shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday evening. It occurred in the most controlled and monitored airspace in America, five kilometers from the White House and the Capitol.

Initial hypotheses point to human error or technical failure, but the FBI has ruled out the possibility of terrorism.

According to data from the plane's transponder, it was at an altitude of about 400 feet (120 meters) and at a speed of 140 miles per hour (225 km/h) shortly before the crash.

Audio recordings from the control tower show that the pilots of American Eagle 5342 had accepted a runway change, choosing the shorter 33rd.

However, radar tracking shows that the plane had to change its approach course, a detail that may have contributed to the tragedy.

Less than 30 seconds before the collision, an air traffic controller asked the helicopter if it had the plane inbound, then transmitted a second message: “Pat 25 pass below CRJ.” A few seconds later, the two planes collided.

For two hours, rescue helicopters flew over the river in the darkness looking for survivors, the lights of six rafts searching the waters visible from the Washington Sailing Marina, south of the airport, where journalists and onlookers had gathered in the chilly evening.

The plane split in two and fell from a height of over a hundred meters into the partially frozen Potomac River, with its tail sticking out slightly from the water.

The nearby helicopter was underwater upside down.

A Kansas lawmaker told reporters that it's sad when more than 60 people lose their lives at the same time.

It is unclear what went wrong: the control tower had asked the plane to land on runway 33, initially it appeared the helicopter had not responded to the tower's warnings, but according to Fox News, it responded on a different frequency.

The same television station suggested that the airport itself is perhaps overused, being more central and used by many members of Congress, as well as the general public.

The new Pentagon chief, Pete Hegseth, wrote on social media that investigations were opened "immediately" by the military and the Department of Defense.

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy told the media that parts of the plane have been found in three different parts of the river.

Silence reigns in the terminal at Ronald Reagan International Airport as hopes for survival fade.

All 60 passengers and four crew members who were aboard the plane that crashed into the Potomac River last night after colliding with a military helicopter in mid-air outside Washington were all killed, authorities confirmed.

Also killed were the 3 soldiers who were traveling in the US Army's "Black Hawk".

Donald Trump will hold a press conference on the plane crash in the White House briefing room at 11:00 a.m. local time.
