Former Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang has resigned after the US Department of Justice accused her of acting illegally in the interest of the Chinese government.

According to US authorities, Wang has pleaded guilty to a criminal charge related to colluding with Chinese officials, and faces up to 10 years in prison.

US prosecutors said Wang received direct instructions from Chinese government officials and distributed pro-Beijing propaganda materials without declaring her activities to US authorities, as required by law. The investigation found that she published articles and materials in favor of China through a media platform called “US News Center,” which presented itself as an information site for the Chinese-American community in Arcadia.

One of the cases cited by the Justice Department involved the distribution of an article denying allegations of forced labor and abuses against Uighurs in China's Xinjiang region. According to investigators, the article was sent to Wang via the WeChat app by a Chinese official and she immediately published it on the media platform she managed.

In a statement to the media, her lawyers said that Wang "apologizes and expresses regret for the mistakes made in her personal life," adding that her commitment to the Arcadia community had never changed.

On the other hand, US authorities described the case as a success in the fight against foreign influence in American institutions. Justice Department officials stated that individuals who act covertly on behalf of foreign governments undermine US democracy and national security.

The Arcadia City Manager said the allegations are serious and troubling, but clarified that the investigation has not revealed any involvement of city finances or official processes in the matter. According to him, the activities Wang is accused of took place before she was sworn in as a member of the city council in late 2022.
