Is Russia preparing for nuclear attacks? The CIA chief speaks
Russian destruction in Irpin, Ukraine

The head of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), William Burns, said that so far there is "no practical evidence that the Russians plan to deploy or use tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine."

Following the invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24, Russia announced that it had put its nuclear arsenal on high alert, reports the BBC.

"Given the type of weapons they wield, we certainly will not take this opportunity lightly. "As an intelligence service with a special focus, we will monitor the situation, especially at a time when stocks for Russia are very high," William Burns told a conference hosted by the Financial Times.

He also assessed that Russian President Vladimir Putin is in "such a state of mind in which he does not believe he can afford to lose."

"I think he is convinced at the moment that doubling the action will allow him to move forward," Burns said.
