Militants in Gaza hit Israel with more than 20 rockets after the death of a Palestinian prisoner who had gone on hunger strike in an Israeli prison.

Three foreign workers were injured in a rocket attack, which came after Israeli tanks bombarded Gaza in response to an earlier rocket attack.

The Israeli military said it launched strikes on Gaza on Tuesday evening.

The prisoner, Khader Adnan, was a senior Islamic Jihad figure accused of terrorism offences.

Israeli authorities said he refused medical attention during his 87-day strike.

But one of his lawyers accused them of negligence, while the Palestinian prime minister described his death as "deliberate murder".

An umbrella group representing militant groups in Gaza, including Islamic Jihad, said the rocket attacks were "an initial response to this heinous crime".

The first three rockets, which were fired hours after the announcement of Adnan's death, landed in open areas, the Israel Defense Forces said.

Later, they said they hit Gaza with "tank fire" in response to rocket attacks. The Israel Defense Forces said the militants fired another 22 rockets, four of which were intercepted by Israel's missile defense system.

Who was Khader Adnan?

Over the past two decades, Khader Adnan, 45, was in Israeli custody several times.

He went on hunger strike four times before.

Although Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails often take a stand by refusing food, this is believed to be the first such death in three decades.

Adnan began his fifth hunger strike shortly after he was detained by Israeli forces at his home in Arraba, near the northern city of Jenin in the occupied West Bank, on February 5.

Israeli authorities charged him with supporting terrorism, association with a terrorist group and incitement, and he was due to go on trial this month.

But Palestinian prisoners' rights group Addameer said he was being held on "false charges" intended to "further oppress Palestinian activists".

The Israel Prison Service announced on Tuesday that Adnan "was found early in the morning in his cell unconscious" and that he was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A senior Israeli official told the AFP news agency that Adnan risked his life by refusing medical attention.

But Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh said Israel "has committed a deliberate assassination attempt against prisoner Khader Adnan by rejecting his request for his release, medically neglecting him and keeping him in a cell despite the seriousness of his health condition".

Islamic Jihad - which is the second most powerful militant group in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip - said its fight would continue and that the enemy "will once again understand that its crimes will not go unpunished." answer".

According to the Addameer group, there are approximately 4,900 Palestinians in Israeli prisons.

Most are serving sentences, having been found guilty by Israeli courts, or are being held for questioning, have been charged or are on trial.

The Palestinians consider all those held by Israel to be political prisoners./REL
