The Prosecutor General of Bulgaria, Ivan Geshev, escaped an assassination attempt aimed at his physical elimination. The attack was organized with a quantity of explosives that exploded during the passage of the high official's vehicle.
At 11:45, all Bulgarian institutions were on their feet about what happened on the Samokov-Kovachevtsi road axis. Police forces are convinced this was not an attempt at intimidation, but an assassination attempt on the attorney general.
The latter is likely to have been tracked down and according to the head of the National Investigative Service, the assassination was professionally organized.
"The bomb was not less than 3 kilograms of TNT, according to the preliminary opinion of experts, but also with shrapnel that exploded and hit the trees on the other side of the road. The metal hair we found was the size of a human fingernail," said Borislav Sarafov, director of the National Investigative Service.
"Our duty is to protect the life and health of Bulgarian citizens and we will do that," said Petar Todorov, secretary general of the Ministry of the Interior.
Ivan Geshev is fine. Additional measures have been taken for his safety. The investigation on the ground continues, with police dogs searching for traces of the attackers.
The assassination is similar to the murder of former Italian prosecutor Giovani Falcone by the Italian mafia, where the highway he was traveling on was blown up.
