The Ferrochrome Plant in Papër, Elbasan, owned by the company "Albchrome sh.pk", has become an environmental bomb with a high risk to public health.

A field inspection by the National Environmental Agency has uncovered a serious scandal: the metallurgical operator has illegally deposited hundreds of tons of highly toxic waste in the open, provoking a silent environmental disaster.

Kapitali exclusively publishes the audit report on the Albchrome entity with legal representative administrator Teuta Ustundag. The report, conducted by inspectors Xhevdet Haxhiaj, Henri Bacinozi, and Enver Halipaj, concludes a genuine environmental genocide with fatal consequences for the health of the local population.

The most alarming finding of the inspection is the discovery of over 300 tons of dust captured by chimney filters, classified with the environmentally hazardous code 10 08 15*.

This industrial waste, which contains high concentrations of heavy metals, was packaged in simple "big bags" and left stacked in the open for more than a year.

The scandal deepens further with the management of ferrochrome slag (code 10 08 09). Their massive landfill is completely uninsulated, without perimeter fencing and without any protective sewerage.

In contact with rain and atmospheric agents, these slags are continuously oxidized.

The polluted waters generated by this process, loaded with hazardous metallurgical waste, flow out of control, are absorbed by the ground and directly poison the groundwater basins of the Papër area.

WHO classifies it as a Group 1 carcinogen.
The hazardous waste that languishes in the plant attacks the health of the population through two fatal routes: air and water. On the one hand, the 300 tons of filter dust (code 10 08 15*), left for over a year in simple bags in the open air, crumble and spread by the wind into the atmosphere, being inhaled directly by the inhabitants.

On the other hand, unsealed massive slags (code 10 08 09) are washed away by rain, causing Hexavalent Chromium and heavy metals to penetrate deep into the soil. This process directly contaminates groundwater flows and springs in the area, causing the toxins to end up in drinking water and the agricultural products that are irrigated with them.

The presence of Hexavalent Chromium in air and water is a red alert, as this element is certified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a Group 1 carcinogen.

Fatal consequences for the health of the population
Inhaling dust and consuming polluted water directly cause lung cancer, as well as significantly increase the risk of stomach, liver and kidney cancer.

In addition to the tumor risk, continuous exposure to these residues causes severe damage to the respiratory tract - such as chronic bronchitis and irreversible fibrosis - and carries mutagenic properties that directly damage DNA, posing serious reproductive risks for pregnant women.

Finally, the simple use of contaminated water provokes severe skin inflammation (dermatitis), severe environmental allergies, and open dermal ulcers that are very difficult to heal.

The residents of Papër and Elbasan are unknowingly inhaling and drinking a poison that has been stored in the open air for more than a year.

Environmental chaos and hidden installations
The KTA documents show complete anarchy within the plant enclosure. Albchrome has secretly operated an entire gas station (point ID 1.10) without declaring it or including it in the environmental permit.

Also, near the oil depot - which does not even have a protective embankment for the risks of leakage - inspectors found piles of scrap materials and plastic canisters discarded without any kind of separation or environmental criteria.

The facts revealed in the Paper clearly show how heavy industry operates when business profit is put before the safety of residents' lives and environmental protection./ kapitali.al
