AADF also targets Durres Archaeological Park after Butrint

Butrint Park is the first archaeological and cultural site to be managed by the Albanian-American Development Fund. The Ministry of Culture has introduced it as a pilot and ambitious project that will improve park management.

But Butrin is apparently the key to the AADF's entry into other archaeological areas. The long-term management plan of some areas in the city of Durres envisions, among other things, the improvement, interpretation and presentation of the amphitheatre of Roman baths and the Byzantine forum.

The idea introduced by Italian architect Stefano Boeri also envisions the establishment of an archaeological park for the inhabitants of the city of Durres and tourists.

Under the management plan, the main objective of the project is to connect the coast and port of Durres with the main tourist attractions of the city, as many peripheral cultural attractions are still detached and difficult to access for residents and visitors, thus hindering full tourist development.

Under the project, the AADF will finance and manage architect Boeri's project, which during the implementation period must, under the plan, co-operate with the Ministry of Culture and the National Institute of Cultural Heritage.

In the description made by architect Boeri it is said that many of the works of archaeological and historical importance are still underground.

"Roman baths are known as cultural monuments; They extend to an area of about 700 square meters and include several rooms, of which only two, caldarium and swimming pools, have been accurately identified, while tepidarium and frigidarium still remain underground. The archaeological area of the Byzantine forum, also called "Rotonda", was used as a public space for the organization of fairs and conferences and covers an area of approximately 2530 square meters. It contains the remains of a circular gateway with a podium in the center partly below the level of the road, sidewalks and surrounding buildings, the project says.

The AADF has already funded the Butrint Archaeological Park for several years, while also securing the agreement with the Ministry of Culture to take over the management of this park. Accusations have been made by the opposition that this concession paves the way for the construction of villas and hotels in areas of historical and inheritance importance.

Meanwhile, in Durres this will be the first major funding from The AADF, which if it follows the same history as Butrinti, it could provide management of this park a few years later.
