'Seismic lights' also appear in Turkey

The strange phenomena in the sky above Turkey appeared at the exact moment when the area was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4.

Several videos posted on social networks and then shared by hundreds of people around the world show lightning in the sky during the earthquake that struck central Turkey.

From the security cameras, you can also see the moment of the appearance of a light in the sky, which is similar to other earthquakes, such as the one on November 26, 2019, which hit Albania, causing 51 victims and hundreds of injuries.

Many have thought about lightning, which according to a century-old legend, would be seen exactly during an earthquake.

Geophysicists and meteorologists are not entirely sure why this phenomenon occurred.

Some believe that lightning occurs if there is a large crack in the ground nearby, while others say it is an electric arc caused by swinging power lines.

Bad time

There are several factors that, at least in this case, would help disassociate the connection between lightning and earthquakes.

First: in the area where the earthquake struck - as the weather maps show - there was a large front of bad weather with rain, snow and lightning at the time of the impact.

In short, the electric shocks had started for some time. As reported by scientific studies, lightning has a duration of 10-50 microseconds, while "seismic lights" will last about 0.5 seconds.

Short circuits

Another explanation is due to the consequences of the earthquake on the electricity distribution systems.

In the area, according to local media, there were several short circuits from power plants and related equipment or other high-tech systems scattered throughout the area.

In the center of attention, in this case, are the so-called "telluric lights" (which in English have the acronym "Eql", that is, earthquake lights).

Some explain them with the energy that comes out of the underground due to the strong friction of tectonic plates, while others say that it has nothing to do with the earth, but the lights of electricity wires or transformers that measure due to the vibrations strong.

According to various experts - explains the Geological Survey of the United States (Usgs) - until today there is no reliable evidence that connects these lights with earthquakes, also because it has never been possible to exclude the malfunction of the power plants destroyed by the tremors .
