When he announced the exclusion of Sali Berisha from the parliamentary group of the Democratic Party on September 9, 2021 without first obtaining the opinion and approval of the party's forums, Lulzim Basha justified the personal decision as taking responsibility to avoid division.
Lulzim Basha and his supporters had not calculated well. The decision not only did not avoid the split, but also cost Basha his head. Sali Berisha launched 'Foltoren' at the base, which culminated in the December 11 Assembly, in which he expelled Basha, while in the March 6 elections, he forced him to leave.
After these elections, Sali Berisha entered the PD headquarters and at the end of May was voted as its chairman, in a process that de jure is still not recognized by the courts. But Berisha also made the calculations wrong, not with Lulzim Basha, but with the Americans.
Today, his PD has been suspended the right to vote in the European People's Parties, the right-wing parties of the continent, foreign diplomats attached to Tirana, or those who visit the Albanian capital avoid the headquarters, while Basha's battle continues in the parliamentary group , directed by Enkelejd Alibeaj.
As a balance, Sali Berisha took the PD boat to escape from the declaration of non grata and personal isolation and as a result he is leading the largest opposition party to a declaration of de facto non grata.
The conclusion so far shows that the process that Lulzim Basha started with the justification of avoiding the division of the party, and that Sali Berisha continued with the same reasoning, today has produced a Democratic Party that is more divided than ever before, more isolated internationally and weaker.
