We spend more on clothes than the European average in relation to the budget,

Although we are one of the poorest countries in Europe and hold a record for spending on food in relation to the total budget, Albanian families do not skimp when it comes to clothing, perhaps giving up on other more essential needs.

INSTAT data show that in 2022, Albanian families spent 5% of the total on clothing and shoes. This share is higher than the European average of 4.3% for the same year, according to Eurostat data.

In total, out of 38 countries, Albania ranks 15th, leaving behind countries such as Germany, Sweden, Finland, etc. In the region, the country is second, together with Montenegro, with both 5%, after Bosnia and Herzegovina, which holds the record with 5.4%. For other countries, the indicator is lower, with North Macedonia and Serbia having this share of 4.3% each.

In Europe, the record is held by Turkey, with 7% of total expenditure going to clothing, followed by Romania (6.3%) and Estonia (5.9%). There was no way to miss Italy either, which is considered to be the main center of fashion, with 5.5% of the total.

The citizens most uninterested in clothing and shoes live in one of the richest countries, Switzerland, and spend only 2.3% of the total budget. The Hungarians are also indifferent, with 3% and the French with 3.3%.

Although in weight to total expenses, Albanian families do not seem to save, in terms of value they spend very little to buy clothing, due to the low total budget they have available to meet all needs.

Eurostat data reveals that per capita spending on clothing and footwear was 140 euros per year (for 2020, the latest available data), up from 620 euros that a European had for the same year. Spending in value is the lowest in Europe and about 4 times lower than the European average. For comparison, an Italian spends about 840-1,100 euros per year on clothes.

At similar levels is North Macedonia, with 150 euros per capita. The Serbs, although they have a lower weight, have a higher budget in value, at 190 euros in 2020, but which has reached 260 euros in 2022.

The value record is held by the Danes, the Irish, the Italians, the Austrians, with more than 1,100 euros per capita per year.
