The Delegation of the European Union in Albania has clarified that the financial data on irregularities with the IPARD II agricultural program financed by the EU in Albania, as reported in a statistical assessment accompanying the Annual Report of the European Commission 2022 on the protection of the financial interests of the European Union and the fight against fraud, have been wrongly reported by the Albanian authorities.
According to the clarification, "The high financial amounts reported as irregular and published in the report are incorrect, as a result of reporting errors by the Albanian authorities regarding the use of currency (lek instead of euro). The exact amount reported by the Albanian authorities for 2022 is, in fact, 256,321.36 Euros.
This report of the European Commission and the data it contains relate to the reporting period of 2022 and refer to the irregularities discovered and declared by the Albanian Agency for the implementation of IPARD.
According to the EU delegation, this report of the European Commission and the data included in it are not related to the recent OLAF investigation into the funding from the IPARD II program in Albania.
According to the EU, the recent OLAF investigation has been completed and the European Commission services have contacted the Albanian authorities in order to take a position. Once the European Commission receives a response from the authorities, it will assess the need for further action. In relation to the OLAF investigation, the European Commission has already taken temporary preventive measures as of July 2023 to protect the financial interests of the European Union.
