Although price growth in April slowed down again, some of the basic foods have continued to rise in price at a rapid rate.
The detailed data of INSTAT revealed that "milk, cheese, egg", "fish", "meat" and "potato" have continued to grow at double-digit rates.
Dairy has become almost unaffordable for most Albanian families and its growth is not stopping.
In April, the group "Milk, cheese and eggs" became more expensive by 15.5%, after an expansion of 17.1% in the same period of the previous year.
Operators have claimed that their costs have increased due to raw material, labor shortages that have reduced the level of raw milk collection as well as fiscal policies that have reduced the level of VAT refunded.
Dairy products are even more expensive than the region, increasing import competition.
Meat is the other basic product that is costing more in the family budget. In April, according to INSTAT, the annual index of this group increased by 12.3%, from 7.8% which was the annual change in the same month of the previous year.
As in the case of milk, the increase in price is related to the problems that livestock is going through in the country, encouraging imports.
Other INSTAT data showed that for the first months of the year, from the food groups, only imports related to animal products, such as dairy and meat, experienced an increase.
The increase in imports of these products is coming as a result of the crisis that the local livestock is going through, where the number of animals is shrinking rapidly in small farms as a result of the reduction and aging of the population in rural areas.
The lack of domestic production has caused dairy prices to rise at very high rates in the last year. https://www.monitor.al/engerci-i-konsumuit-te-gjhita-importet-e-ushqimete-me-renie-ne-3-mujor-pervec-mehit-dhe-bilmetit/

In April, inflation fell to 4.6%, the lowest level in more than a year.
The indicator was mainly affected by the drop in oil prices, with the "Services to personal transport" group, which fell by 13.8%, after having increased by 30.2% in April 2022, when the crisis was just beginning as a result of Russia's attacks on Ukraine.
In the same line, oil, which became more expensive at the beginning of the war, increased by less than 1% in April of this year.
