Albania is facing a genuine economic paradox, as the government reports galloping growth in tourism, but official figures speak of an overall contraction in consumption.
The Institute of Statistics reported that imports of goods decreased again in June by 0.2 percent compared to the same month last year.
Meanwhile, on a six-month basis, Albania's imports this year are 2 percent lower than a year ago. In value, Albania has imported 100 million euros less goods from abroad in the first 6 months of the year.
This situation of declining imports is also accompanied by a decline in domestic production, especially in key sectors of the economy such as agriculture or industry.

In the first quarter of the year, the country's agricultural production shrank by 2.76 percent, while industrial production fell by 5.66 percent. These developments in the real sector of the economy come as the government reports an increase in tourism. So Albania has more tourism, but less consumption.
The intersection of leading indicators shows that the Albanian economy is facing a consumption squeeze this year, as it is importing less and at the same time producing less domestically.
Meanwhile, another signal from foreign trade figures is that of restraining business investments, as evidenced by the decrease in imports of machinery and equipment, as well as the contraction of construction, signaled by the decline in imports of construction materials./ kapitali.al
