Albania's population has been reduced by 18% at the end of 2024, compared to 2011. In the periods in question, when population censuses were conducted, the country has been reduced by over 500 thousand inhabitants.

According to the European Statistical Agency, this percentage decline is the highest in Europe, and Albania is followed by Bulgaria, which has lost 12.3% of its population over the past decade. In the region, almost all countries experience waves of emigration, and the country that has managed to keep its population almost unchanged is Montenegro, which has recorded an increase of 0.6% since 2011.

In Albania, the strong population contraction is linked to two factors. First, the slowdown in natural migration, which saw a new wave after 2016, mainly from the young population.

Western European countries, although older, have managed to increase their populations as a result of aggressive immigration policies as a solution to address demographic problems resulting from aging populations and declining birth rates. Meanwhile, the eurozone has increased its population by 3.2% since 2011.
