Protection of water resources, the Economy Committee approved the new draft law.

The Economy Commission approved this Monday the draft law on water resources, which has been proposed by the Water Resources Management Agency.

The main objective of this bill is to ensure the quality and good use of water resources.

The Deputy Minister of Tourism and Environment, Almira Xhembulla, emphasized that the purpose of this draft law is the protection and conservation of water resources, promoting a rational use for the economic and social development of the country.

The project was initiated by the Water Resources Management Agency and enjoys support from the European Union and the Austrian Development Agency.

Gerta Lubonja, Director General of the Water Resources Management Agency, explained some of the main points of the draft law. "In the field of water management, this is an important step in the direction of adapting the local legislation to the standards of the European Union, as part of the integration process" - said Lubonja

The main objectives of the bill include improving water quality and safety, protecting and restoring aquatic ecosystems, improving transboundary cooperation, and monitoring and reporting water quality.

In a report by the Supreme Council of Services, in 2022, it was found that water resources in the country are still not adequately monitored. The report states that, despite the increase in revenue from permits for the use of water resources, there is still a high number of illegal users.
