The Italian government will help farmers, tax breaks for facing difficulties

Italy's government will offer tax breaks to help struggling farmers, providing support for the sector amid a wave of protests across Europe. Farmers have staged protests to express their anger at low product prices, rising costs, cheap imports and restrictions imposed by the European Union's efforts to combat climate change, demanding a response from the authorities.

Protests have subsided in France and Germany for now, but appear to be growing in intensity in places like Italy, where groups of farmers have gathered outside Rome with their tractors.

The government looks set to partially restore an income tax cut that was scrapped in the 2024 budget, conceding to one of the main demands of farmers. This is a measure aimed at tax exemption for those agricultural entrepreneurs who need effective support, according to the Minister for Relations with the Parliament, Luca Ciriani.

For her part, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that it is clear that the main priority for her government in the management of public resources is their use to support the weakest. She said the tax breaks could be included in a decree currently being considered in parliament.

Agriculture is a sensitive sector for Melon's right-wing administration. Coldiretti, the main agricultural lobby group, has close ties to the government, but the current protests are being led by a number of other associations.

Meloni said her government had already done a lot to protect farmers from European policies seen as harmful. She emphasized that the government protected the agricultural sector from some elections that were too ideological.
