The ratio of the young and the elderly in Albania is becoming deeper, with the latter in priority. Eurostat shows that in the last 10 years, the elderly population in Albania has increased by about 5%, while the young population has decreased by 1%.

An analysis by Eurostat shows that the dependency ratio of the elderly in Albania is 24.4% in 2023. This report expresses in percentage the persons over the working age +65 years and the young people aged 15-64. In 2002 the dependency rate was 12.3% and in 20 years the indicator has doubled.

The data show that the median age in Albania from 2013 to 2023 has increased by 3 years, reaching 38.5 years.

This report directly affects the pension scheme. If there are more retirees than employed in the scheme, it goes into a deficit, as has been the case in recent years in Albania, and the need for state funding has been created. This may also lead to an increase in the retirement age.

In the long term, a ratio where the retirement age prevails shows a gloomy panorama for the demographic future of the country and the labor market.

Eurostat shows that the whole of Europe is suffering from aging and a lack of young people, as a result of increased life expectancy and declining fertility. The population pyramid has turned into a rhombus and very quickly, it can only be a triangle.
