A new company aims to revolutionize the electricity supply sector.
The company is based in Texas, a state that began 'liberating' its energy industry from government regulation more than 25 years ago and has since emerged as a leader in wind and solar energy.
These factors have fueled the rise of Base Power Inc., a company co-founded last year in Austin by Zach Dell, son of personal computer billionaire Michael Dell.
'Base' is a home electricity provider.
"We believe the existing power grid has problems," says Dell, who is also the company's chief executive. "It's outdated, too small and not maintained."
Base seeks to install a battery-powered energy storage system in customers' homes at a cost of $2,000. This battery is built to help people in times of power outages and comes at a lower price compared to similar systems. The company's goal is to create a vast network of batteries and use software to monitor energy prices, so it can charge batteries when energy is cheap and remove them when its price rises.
'Base' has managed to collect 68 million dollars from investors, but there are no shortage of challenges that await it. To begin with, consumers must find a place for a large battery in their homes, carry out the installation of the device with a company technician and change the energy supplier. Such a move also requires a large sales force and a variety of contractors to handle installations.
Switching energy suppliers isn't that easy in Texas, due to some red tape in the disconnection process, but power outages are a real problem in this state. In general, the US has underinvested in energy infrastructure over the past few decades as population and demands have increased. Turning attention to other alternatives such as solar and wind energy will bring problems, as their operation depends on specific conditions. This makes the network less reliable and paves the way for the 'Base' company.
Initially, 'Base' is buying battery technology and energy from suppliers. However, they are working on an internal battery storage system that has an Apple-like industrial design and can be installed more quickly. In the coming years, Base also plans to build its own wind and solar farms. So far the company has installed systems in a small number of homes and says it has several hundred people on a waiting list.
