Mining activity in our country is dominated by the extraction of chrome ore, with about 43% of active permits. In total, according to the latest data available from the National Agency of Natural Resources, there are 236 permits for the extraction of chrome ore, out of a total of 554 active permits. Limestone ranks second, with 134 permits or 24% of the total, while nickel iron is behind it with 29 permits or 5% of the total.
Practically almost ¾ of the mining activity in Albania is made from these 3 minerals. Meanwhile, 21 permits for the extraction of marbleized limestone, 19 permits for siliceous sandstone, 16 permits for slate limestone and 15 permits for the extraction of copper ore are currently active.
The rest of the mining activity in the country extends to clay permits, decorative limestone, alabaster gypsum, bituminous gravel sand, etc.
Regarding the establishment of mineral extraction, almost 50% of the mining permits are concentrated in 3 regions of the country, more specifically in Dibër, Kukës and Berat.
Meanwhile, from time to time the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy announces invitations to participate in competitive procedures for new mining permits. Based on the 2022-2024 plan for the development of the mining sector. According to the latter, the development of mining activity for this period will mainly focus on the extraction of limestone, decorative stone and marbleized limestone. Based on the official document, the opening of competitive procedures or the development of open procedures is foreseen for 62 mining areas, while only a very limited number is expected to be given for the extraction of chrome ore.
