'Agriculture increased by 15 percent' / Where did Minister Krifca find
Frida Krifca

During the reporting of last year's achievements and the challenges and objectives set by the Ministry of Agriculture for this year, Minister Frida Krifca also spoke with figures.

Krifca said that in the 12 months of 2022, agriculture recognized growth, both in the value of exports and in their quantity. For the value, the minister mentioned a figure of over half a billion euros, while for the quantity she said that agriculture increased by 15.6 percent.

The minister did not elaborate on which agricultural sectors had grown and by how much they had grown. But, if the figures given for the increase in exports in value can be reliable due to the general increase in prices, the figure given by Krifca for the quantity is not supported by the official INSTAT data.

Agriculture not only did not grow in the first nine months of last year, but contracted slightly. According to INSTAT data, until September 2022, agriculture was the only sector with declines, even though the rest of the economy reported growth, led by construction and tourism.

INSTAT's data in the periodic quarterly reports of Gross Domestic Product show that agriculture fell by 0.02 percent in the third quarter of last year, while it grew by negligible figures of 0.05 and 0.01 in the first two quarters of the same year. .

Statistics for the whole of last year have not yet been published, but the data of the first nine months of last year are enough to seriously question the claims of the Minister of Agriculture for an increase of more than 15 percent in the amount of agricultural exports.

...only if this increase was registered in the last three months of the previous year.

Simply put, the minister in this case is betrayed by the figures issued by her institution, considering that INSTAT draws up periodic reports based on the data submitted by the Ministry of Agriculture and the directorates and offices under it.
