Better late than never!

"What can be called victory?", asked the great German poet Rainer Maria Rilke. "Patience. He is everything.”

Today, Albania has taken the next step, delayed, in a process full of achievements, disappointments, efforts, blockages, stubbornness, concessions, self-restraint and prejudices, praises and curses, but since the human being also accepts what comes after the delay as a relief, better late than never.

Better late than never, because Albania has been a hostage in this journey for years.

Hostage to our historical extension and prolongation, hostage to ourselves and our political shenanigans, hostage to the crises in Europe and the overextension through the matrices of the membership process, hostage to the nationalist policies of other countries. In short, he has been living in the test of patience for years.

Better late than never, for Albania and North Macedonia, because still on this side of the world, in the Balkans, Europe is seen as an unparalleled model for modernizing ourselves. It is the first preference of every business person for partnership, of every young person for education, and even of every unemployed person for emigration.

Better late than never for the geopolitical maturity of Europe, which with a new war on the continent like the one in Ukraine, does not have the luxury of facing a new security crisis in the Balkans.

And yet, as long as our loyal love for Europe neither comes nor goes too far to make us like all of Europe, even today, the joy of a delayed achievement neither comes nor goes too far.

Albania has been in a contractual relationship with the EU since 2006, applied for membership in 2009, received the status of a candidate country in 2014 and since 2018 has been giving and receiving proposals for opening negotiations.

At every stage of this journey, there is effort, will and dedication to fulfill the obligations of an army of the Albanian public administration over decades. It is of little importance today whether the SAA was negotiated by the socialists and signed when the democrats came to power, or the status of the candidate country was prepared by the democrats and coincidentally during the time of the socialists and so on.

Kështu që Good Luck!

As sepse kemi firmosur traktatet europiane.

It is the national interest, our security and survival as a nation, the hope when we don't know where to hold on to it, the desire and effort between generations for the 'blessed day that rises from the west', to encourage us to love Europe in our daily life.

Between the new challenges of the Europeanization reforms and the will not to despise them as superfluous, the day came,
'Better late than never', to take our being Europeans seriously.
