In August 1936, the episode "Albania!" Aired all over America. of the documentary series The March of Time.
An American cameraman had been in Albania and had managed to convince Zog to be filmed walking with the adjutants and his nephew Tati in the territory of the palace, where today is the Academy of Sciences.
But all this seemed to be a trap for the king, who was still single.
"Even a shepherd in the mountains of Albania is not more lonely than the Albanian king", says the speaker in the documentary.
"When occasional tourists come from Durrës to a hotel in Tirana, King Zog sometimes wants to meet with them to talk about the world outside Albania. It is known that, in his lonely nights, the Albanian king secretly observes the hotel from the palace with binoculars ".
The documentary then shows a hotel room, where four smoking American merchants play cards while being watched with binoculars by Zog. Suddenly the phone rings and one of the traders picks up the phone. Following is this fabricated dialogue played by actors:
-Hello!
Excuse me, what are you playing, bridge or poker? - asks the voice on the other side of the line.
-Poker, - answers the surprised trader.
"I was thinking that too," says the voice.
-But who are you? - asks the trader.
-I'm King Bird. I really want to come there and play.
-Of course, Your Majesty.
-Then, I'm coming right away.
-Did you hear? - the merchant tells his friends after he hangs up the phone. He was the King of Albania. He set out to come here.
Everyone looks at each other in amazement.
The bird felt insulted. The Foreign Minister, Fuad Asllani, called the American charge d'affaires in Tirana, Riggs, to whom he protested and asked if the US government could prosecute the producers.
Riggs responded that, if the Albanian government wanted to pursue the matter legally, it could seek the opinion of a lawyer in the US.
Later, the American legation in Tirana expressed regret for the incident and the case was closed.
And yet, not everyone in America thought the episode was an insult to the king. Rather, all of this could be seen as a nice joke and free advertisement for the little kingdom.
