For many countries, Donald Trump has yet to appoint ambassadors. While other positions have been given mainly to donors and his trusted people, who, in many of the countries they serve, have ended up at the center of negative news.

Since returning to the White House, Donald Trump has shown a particular lack of interest in one issue: the appointment of American ambassadors. According to the American Foreign Service Association, the professional association of diplomats, 92 US diplomatic missions around the world currently do not have a Senate-confirmed head of mission – including missions in particularly important regions.

In the Middle East, where the country has just been embroiled in another war, embassies in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait and Iraq are without leaders. Neither Kiev nor Moscow has a representative with the rank of ambassador. A chargé d’affaires is in charge. The same is true in Berlin, where Trump has yet to name a successor to Biden’s ambassador, Amy Gutmann.

For the positions that Trump has filled, according to an analysis by the Washington Post, donors to his electoral campaign or friends have been chosen, instead of career diplomats who know the respective country.

American presidents have traditionally used appointments to reward trusted people and donors with coveted positions in warm climates – but in Trump’s case, so far, they have been the vast majority. The fact that loyalty is more important than experience may be one reason why some ambassadors have ended up in the spotlight in the countries they serve.

The latest diplomatic blunder was made by the US ambassador to Beijing, David Perdue. The former businessman and politician was appointed by Trump last year. In 2020, he lost his bid for re-election as a Georgia state senator and two years later lost the party's primary for governor. He claimed, without evidence, that the 2020 election was "stolen."

Following Xi Jinping's three-day state visit to Washington, where Perdue was present, he appeared on Fox News. During a Sunday morning show, the ambassador was quite open and revealed that Trump had offered the Chinese president the opportunity to buy American weapons.

"He actually asked President Xi once if he wanted to buy any of them," Perdue said, putting the administration in a position where it had to provide explanations.

The State Department was quick to deny the statement: "US law prohibits the sale of arms to China and there are no plans to sell arms to China."

In the first case, the reason was an open letter from Ambassador Charles Kushner, in which he harshly criticized Macron's decision to recognize Palestine as a state. The second time, the reason was a warning from the US State Department about "violent far-left radicalism," which, it said, was "on the rise" in France.

But the US ambassador, who is also the father of Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, ignored calls to appear. The French Foreign Ministry subsequently banned him from access to all members of the government.

Kushner then called Minister Jean-Noël Barrot to schedule a meeting – and to request the lifting of the visit ban.

Belgium

The US ambassador to Belgium, Bill White, has also been summoned for explanations by the country's foreign minister. As in the case of Kushner's first summons, White himself had caused discontent.

In February, he accused the country of "unacceptable harassment of the Jewish community" after Belgian authorities launched an investigation into suspicions of performing circumcisions without medical certification.

Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot released a lengthy statement on X, in which he rejected White's accusations.

"Categorizing Belgium as anti-Semitic is not only wrong, but also dangerous disinformation that undermines the real fight against hatred," he wrote.

In August, White again incurred Prevot's wrath after posting an artificial intelligence-generated image on Instagram of Belgian Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke on top of a cigar.

Alongside the image he wrote: "Who is the biggest LOSER in Belgium?"

Vandenbroucke had previously called for clearer health warnings on alcoholic products.
