"A visa is a privilege, not a right" - The US revokes visas when there

The US State Department confirms that the administration of President Donald Trump is using legal authority to revoke visas in cases where potential concerns for national security, public safety, or other circumstances are identified where such a measure is deemed justified.

In an official response to Euronews Albania, a State Department spokesperson explained that visas can be revoked at any time when there are indications of the visa holder's potential unsuitability or poses a potential threat to public safety.

"The Trump administration is protecting our nation and its citizens by implementing the highest standards of national security and public safety throughout the visa process," the US State Department said in a response.

According to the State Department, revocation can also be made in other circumstances when US authorities deem such a measure necessary. Among the reasons cited for visa cancellation are criminal activity, violation of visa conditions, fraud, and concerns related to national security.

A week ago, it was reported that the US State Department had revoked more than 175,000 visas for foreign nationals since Donald Trump returned to the White House.

In its response to Euronews Albania, the State Department also referred to the position of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, according to whom "an American visa is a privilege, not a right."

The US State Department emphasizes that Secretary Rubio has broad discretionary authority to revoke visas and that the Trump administration is committed to exercising this authority "whenever and wherever" there is a compelling United States policy interest.

How many Albanians have lost their visas?

Euronews Albania asked the US State Department how many of the more than 175,000 revoked visas belong to Albanian citizens.

The State Department did not provide a figure for Albanian citizens.

The department clarified that, as a general rule, it does not comment on its actions in specific cases due to the confidentiality of visa data.

So, the US confirms that visa revocation is being used as part of the Trump administration's policy for national and public security, but has not made public a breakdown of data by citizenship, including the number of Albanians affected.
