The syncytial virus or otherwise known as "RSV" has arrived and is also circulating in Albania. Although this virus mainly affects young people, causing problems in the respiratory tract and the central nervous system, a rare case has recently been recorded in our country. 2 weeks ago, it was confirmed that a 16-year-old boy was also infected, whose condition worsened during the day, which put him in intubation.
The details of the teenager's condition were given by the director of the Infectious Disease Hospital, Najada Çomo, who told in an interview for ReportTv that the teenager's condition had worsened within a few hours, while the symptoms that had appeared were high temperature, cough and pain in the the head.
"Of course, we had a 16-year-old boy who came to the hospital in serious condition. Heavy in a few hours. With a high temperature, severe headache, cough, I realized the situation and was immediately put into mechanical intubation. Problems with the brain, lungs, heart. A young age to go into intubation so quickly, it was not a good situation. We judged that it is a flu situation, but thanks to the analyzes done at ISHP, the cause was identified as RSV. For us in the infectious service, it is a rare case, in an adult.
It was in a new situation. today the boy's condition is good. It was the first time that we had such a serious case. Flu has fever, muscle aches, cough. The special thing is that when you are in the flu season, it is difficult to think that it is this virus and in adults it is a rare situation. The lung was damaged and the swabs came back negative and on taking the test it turned out to be RSV. It is a rare thing to be evident at these ages. He was unexpectedly heavy and at an old age and without any other illness," said Çomo.
The director of the infectious disease hospital, Najada Çomo, said that the detection of this virus, which has the same symptoms as the flu, can only be done through laboratory tests at the PIH.
"A part of young people were hospitalized because the temperature was high. The main signs are flu-like and the symptoms are runny nose, cough, chest pain. They have similarities with bacterial nature and the difference cannot be made based on clinical signs, but the difference is made if the patient is hospitalized and they are treated in the hospital. The case was established 2 weeks ago and no one thought it was this," said Çomo.
A respiratory syncytial virus (#Rsv, acronym for “respiratory syncytial virus”), is a viral agent capable of infecting the respiratory system of patients of any age, but mainly children in the first years of life. Pediatric wards and intensive care wards in hospitals are experiencing difficulties due to the presence of babies with bronchiolitis and pneumonia, caused by this very virus.
To date, there is no specific vaccine for this virus, but “three phase III trials of maternal vaccines and monoclonal antibody therapies are underway, however, they are only indicated for premature and particularly fragile infants. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) can cause pneumonia and bronchiolitis (inflammation of the airways), which affects many children.
