Sali Berisha and Ilir Meta continue to accuse Edi Rama of massive manipulation of the electoral process throughout the country. The accusations are thrown without publishing even one proof or indication of how Edi Rama manipulated this process.
But how long are these accusations? In the absence of evidence provided by the Berisha-Meta duo, the numbers can provide us with an orientation as to whether the process is manipulated or not. Voxnews.al analyzed the percentage of participation and the results in the 2015 local elections, the 2021 parliamentary elections and this Sunday's elections.
The turnout on May 14 was around 38 percent, or about 1.4 million voters, out of 3.6 million. In 2021, participation was 46.33 percent, or 1.66 million. In the 2015 election, turnout was around 47 percent, or just over 1.6 million voters.
The figures show that in these elections, there are at least 250,000 fewer voters. The number of those who boycotted the process compared to the local elections of 2015 and the parliamentary elections of 2021 is not justified only by emigration. According to Eurostat data, there are no more than 40,000 Albanian citizens who have left the country in the last two years.
What has really happened, according to the interpretation of the figures, is the failure of the opposition to attract not only gray and young voters to the ballot box, but also its own supporters in the proportions of 2015 and 2021. To understand the mass boycott the figure that out of 122 thousand voters for the first time, only 16 thousand voted, according to the CEC, or about 14 percent of the total, is enough to remind the youth.
The failure of the opposition is indirectly proven by the votes received by the Socialist Party and its candidates. In general, the majority has kept the same votes as in the 2015 elections. As an example, in Tirana, Erion Veliaj won with 160 thousand votes in 2015. In 2023, he secured almost 159,000 votes. The same tendency of the voter is observed in other municipalities, whether bastion or not of the socialists.
The exceptions are the municipalities that are strongholds of the Democratic Party, such as Kukësi, Tropoja, or Shkodra. In Shkodër, the participation on May 14 was 34 percent, in 2015 the participation was over 45 percent. In Kukës, the participation in 2015 was 60 percent, on May 14 less than 53 percent. In Tropoja, participation in 2015 was 53 percent, in 2023 45 percent.
These are the numbers and the numbers suggest that this Sunday, the opposition reaped what it has sown since 2015. He planted the tent, he planted the boycott, he planted the burning of the mandates, and this Sunday he got the fruit of the citizens' boycott.
