The ancient cave of Spile, known as the “Cave of Odysseus” in Himara, is being covered by barbaric construction. In the eyes of all local and national institutions, the “First Category Monument” of Spile Cave, marked as an object of special historical importance, is being covered by construction and inert materials, by two or three people from the Dhimojani families, who once lived in the castle.

It is claimed by them that it is inherited property….!

For some time now, they have not only destroyed and denatured the cave's entrance environment, which dates back to the Homeric period, but are already at the beginning of the works, penetrating even deeper into the cave.

After blocking one of the two entrances and exits of the cave with a barbaric construction, they now have a business plan for the exploitation of its two entrances and ancient caves, where rare archaeological artifacts are found and unique historical evidence is inherited.

Near the Municipality of Himara, there are complaints from various citizens about this barbarity and scandal related to the most ancient monument of all the regions of the southern coast of Albania.

A day earlier, various citizens prevented the unloading of trucks with sand and inert materials, precisely where a sign assessing it as a Cultural Monument, placed by the former Ministry of Culture and the Institute of Archaeology and History, is located, covered in bushes.

The "Cave of Odysseus" in Spile is mentioned and photographed in all stages of ancient studies, especially those of the Albanian Homeric period.

This cave, in its inner catacombs, holds uniquely important values ​​from past eras and centuries, as well as historical and epochal artifacts from the various developments and states of human life in ancient times.

Currently, the situation constitutes a scandal of shocking proportions. Those interested in ownership of the historical object and monument have made every effort to cover and disappear the layers and ancient objects, deep in the cave, where for some time a sewage pipe from the upper neighborhood of Stefanel has penetrated, and numerous urban and inert waste have been dumped to make the cave and its interiors unvisitable. At the right entrance of the cave, not only has it been built without any criteria, but it is also used as a parking lot, making the monument in question unfrequented for years, even though it has remained evidence in all guides as a monument of unique and historical importance.

None of the national institutions are reacting to this scandal and especially the subsequent barbarity against the rare monument of history and culture in this city.

Many years ago, the world-famous actor, "Albanian Ulysses" Bekim Femiu, reserved a special visit to the "Cave of Odysseus", who, according to publications in the media of the time, considered this visit opportunity as a rare event for his life and relationship with Albania and the Homeric story which he immortalized in world cinematography in the Hollywood film "Odysseus".

The protests and denunciations of Himariot citizens about the disappearance and occupation of this thousand-year-old historical monument are falling on deaf ears.

The Ministry of Culture, the National Historical Museum, the Academy of Sciences, the Institute of History and the Institute of Archaeology should raise a storm of reactions for this scandal and barbaric act, unparalleled with any other historical and ancient monument in the territory of Albania. / By Erisa Mucaj
