Based on the large influx of tourists registered for 2023, the Minister of the Interior, Taulant Balla, has announced that a National Force for Public Security will be created in the State Police.
It will be ready and with sufficient capacity to meet the needs and expectations of touristic Albania for over 10 million tourists.
"With the State Police, we have actually started preparations, to face the need for another level of security in tourist areas.
I know very well that the local police of Saranda, for example, is unable to cope with the challenge that we expect to have, either in terms of the number of tourists, or in their quality. Our police at the local level also suffers from the phenomenon of familiarization, thus damaging the effectiveness of the State Police's work and failure to respond in time.
Therefore, we are creating a National Public Security Force, within the State Police, which will be ready and with sufficient capacity to meet the needs and expectations of the 10 million plus tourist Albania. This new structure within the State Police will increase the presence and efficiency of the police throughout the territory", said Balla.
He took stock of how many police officers have been on the ground during the tourist season. He informed that during this tourist season, more than 1,600 police officers have served in tourist areas, almost 1/6 of the entire available police force.
"During this tourist season, more than 1,600 police officers, almost 1/6 of our entire available police force, have served in tourist areas/beaches. We should all keep in mind a fact, on which an even greater and deserved support for the State Police should be based, not only in terms of financial treatment. All this flow during 2023, with 30% more than the year before, has been handled by the same police force", said Balla.
Among the measures undertaken by the State Police, he singled out the establishment and operation of 6 provisional police stations in the tourist area, the creation of the Maritime Police Unit, with over 100 employees.
"Calls/complaints from the public in tourist areas/beaches were handled in 2905 cases, various disputes were handled in 1134 cases (to prevent the repetition of the shameful case of Mihal Kokëdhima, four years ago) and the perpetrators were arrested in 124 cases", declared the Minister.
Balla requested from the local self-government units investments for road signaling, on the roads leading to the coastal areas, both in the main ones and in the secondary ones.
In total, in 9 months, Albania was visited by 8.3 million foreigners.
