Safet Gjici addressed the Court of Elbasan with the request to be released from prison for health reasons, while the Court postponed the hearing against him on November 11 at 13:00, until the receipt and administration of scientific evidence.
Lawyer Markeljan Jançe has stated that the condition of the former mayor of Kukës is serious.
"Gjici is in a serious state of health from an illness that he has been suffering from for years, but the psychological burden has worsened his condition. We request the evaluation from the Institute of Forensic Medicine to assess the situation", he said.
Gjici continues his stay in a private hospital due to his health condition, with problems of the cardiovascular system, enlargement of the aorta and severe form of diabetes.
The prosecution requests additional information from IEVP about all medical treatments and the assessment of the Institute of Forensic Medicine.
The court accepted the request of the defense for the acceptance of the request for forensic examination and accepted the request of the prosecution for information from IEVP about all the medical treatments of Gjic at the time he was convicted.
The lawyers in their request are based on article 59/a point ce of the Criminal Code, according to which, for remaining sentences of less than two years, stay at home can be allowed for health reasons.
Earlier today, Jançe said that: Gjici suffered for 1 year and 9 months. He has 1 year and two months left. Due to the state of health, we request a stay at Gjic's house. The medical card is presented as evidence and we accept the call of other specialists to verify the medical condition. Gjici continues to be in the hospital due to health conditions.
Judge Suela Lika stopped the session against Safet Gjic for a few minutes due to the ambiguities in the documentation.
The lawyer claims that Gjici is in the hospital while he has been transferred to the Kosovo and Lushnje prison, the letter for representation by the lawyer comes from IEVP Durrës. Due to this ambiguity, the Judge requests the placement of Gjic and the clarification of the documents.
The former mayor of Kukës was sentenced to 3 years in prison, while he has 1.2 years left to serve. Safet Gjici was convicted for abuse of office and passive corruption.
