Roberto Saviano: Albanian organized crime is powerful!
Roberto Saviano

Ditmir Bushati starts his third season of the Public Square podcast with a conversation with a very interesting figure such as the Italian journalist Roberto Saviano .

He is now a well-known public figure because of his courageous denunciations of the Italian mafia, the control it exercises over certain economic structures in Italy and organized crime.

The Italian journalist Roberto Saviano comes to this conversation on important issues related to his concept of "freedom", of which he has been deprived for 18 years, to the culture of "mud machine" versus that of denunciations, to the relations between the Albanian and Italian mafias and what governments can do at this point.

Roberto Saviano has been quite critical of the cooperation protocol between the two governments for refugees and thinks that this contradicts human freedoms and rights and not only that.

Bushati and Saviano start the conversation on the concept of freedom and how much it is worth sacrificing it even for a high public goal. At this point, contrary to what one might expect, Saviano says that freedom is not worth sacrificing.

Focusing on the lessons that Albania has the opportunity to learn from Italy at this point, Saviano thinks that, first of all, "Albania must say goodbye to silence, that is, the fear of speaking.

So, the Albanian institutions fear that they can aggravate this prejudice, worsen the situation of immigrants by talking about crime. It is the opposite. Prejudice is fought.”

At a time when technological development has strongly highlighted the race for clicks, or when alternative truth is sitting cross-legged among us, Saviano and Bushati discuss the concept of the "mud machine" and how it harms the individual even when it comes to causes important public interest but which affects and damages above all democracy.

"Mud machine and delegitimization today is the first tool to attack individuals. It is used by the mafia, regimes, but also ordinary companies, normal parties in democracy, newspapers. And often people become a tool, a tool of the mud machine, without knowing it. They spread false information against a person, not letting an individual breathe, for no reason," says Saviano.

According to him, this is a problem of our time. Long before the bullets, the mud machine arrives. Anyone who has lived through the communist regime knows this strategy very well, since the communist secret services have always used the tool of delegitimization to destroy the individual. Americans call it 'character assassination'.

The journalist of the book "Gamorra" says that Albanian organized crime is very, very extensive and very complex and the relationship between the Albanian mafia and the Italian mafia is one, they are a single fist.

"I feel like saying that the place where Albanian criminality is much stronger than elsewhere is London. The United Kingdom is the country of choice for Albanian criminal groups and there Albanian crime operates in complete autonomy.

Saviano strongly emphasizes the need to discuss crime in order to confront the phenomenon and not to hide it from the public debate.

"What surprises me every time I deal with the Albanian world, which I love very much, or even when I go to Albania, is to hear that the Albanian mafia is talked about much more abroad than in Albania. Much more abroad than in Kosovo. Because of all this, organized Kosovar and Albanian crime as well as Albanian-Macedonian crime is very strong. Greater Albania was not achieved through politics, but through crime. All these elements, unfortunately, are little mentioned. It is enough to see the publications on the Albanian mafia. They are very few."

Saviano is equally critical of the agreement reached between Prime Minister Rama and Italian Prime Minister Meloni regarding refugees and the possibility of bringing a part of them to Albania.

In this agreement, he lists several problems, starting with jurisdictional ones, "So, Italian jurisdiction would extend to an extra-European territory, simply through the handshake between Prime Minister Rama and Prime Minister Meloni.

This means that the Albanian laws will not be applied in those centers, but the Italian ones.

This agreement also presents other problems in relation to the selection of refugees who will be brought to Albania, who and how guarantees their right to international protection and, finally, how will we protect ourselves from criminal organizations?
