The Mayor of Divjaka, Josif Gorrea, has opposed the proposal made by the Socialist Party for Territorial Reform, according to which the municipality he leads will merge with Lushnja.

During a protest held in Divjaka, Gorrea said that the news of the municipality's dissolution had come as a "bomb."

The socialist mayor said he feels betrayed by his party and that he was not asked, nor was he aware of the decision made by the Socialist Party.

Gorrea said that there are several reasons why the municipality he leads should not be dissolved, emphasizing that it has 56 thousand inhabitants and that, according to the census two years ago, around 25 thousand people currently live in Divjaka.

He also leveled accusations, stating that "this cannot be called reform."

"I thank you for being part of this gathering, which yesterday came as a bombshell to all of us. I thought they would have the floor here, but everyone has their own right to speak as they feel. I, as a citizen, like you, am also surprised, although I should have been somewhat aware due to the political position I have.

Yesterday, the news hit me like a bombshell when I saw that the Municipality of Divjakë was one of the 15 municipalities that would be merged. I think that we are here for a purpose and the common purpose is to protect our municipality, which belongs to the hardest working people in the republic. To tell the truth, I feel betrayed, because without any warning this bomb comes to us.

In fact, this government initiative has been rumored for a long time. The Territorial Reform Commission has examined the possibilities of how to continue this reform, but, unfortunately, what happened yesterday cannot be called a reform. Why? Because one of the criteria was the number of inhabitants and I slept peacefully, since our municipality has 56 thousand inhabitants and, in numerical order, we are 26th. So, 27 municipalities had to be merged so that it would be our turn in terms of population. Even according to the census, the municipality has a high number of inhabitants. There are 25 thousand inhabitants, a figure that has been accepted by the Albanian government and which is very high" , said Gorrea, among other things.

Meanwhile, the Divjaka Municipality administration has announced that it will stop working starting Monday.

Citizens, who are both left-wing and right-wing in their beliefs, have stated that they will protest every day in the city's main square until the territorial reform project is canceled.
