A dramatic situation is being experienced in Greece, where large forest fires have forced thousands of people to flee their homes and tourist areas. Strong winds and high temperatures have favored the spread of the flames, putting emergency teams in difficulty.

Hundreds of people, mostly tourists, have been evacuated by boat from the coastal town of Agios Vasileios, in the Viotia region, after a powerful fire quickly approached residential areas.

According to Greek authorities, over 200 people have already safely left, while around 100 others are expected to be evacuated by sea.

The fire broke out on Friday morning and trapped about 500 people, most of them tourists.

Meanwhile, on the island of Crete, a large forest fire has burned thousands of hectares of land and forced about 8,000 people to temporarily evacuate their homes and tourist areas.

Fires have also been reported on the islands of Paros, Andros and Kalymnos, while authorities warn that weather conditions remain dangerous due to strong winds and extreme temperatures.

Greece is one of the European countries facing a wide-scale wave of forest fires, following long periods of high temperatures. Experts believe that climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of these phenomena.

The situation also remains problematic in Portugal and Spain. In Portugal, hundreds of firefighters are battling blazes near Valpaço, where around 15,000 hectares of land have been destroyed, while in Spain authorities continue to monitor the risk of new fires due to the heat wave.
