Warning: 30 years in prison for deliberate arsonists

During the summer, the Fire Service will be on enhanced alert, conducting patrols and monitoring the territory together with other agencies, and temporary stations will be set up in tourist areas and high-risk areas.

On the eve of the summer season and the increased risk of fires, the Fire Protection and Rescue Service organized a coordination meeting with the leaders of firefighting structures from all 61 municipalities in the country, with the participation of the Minister of Internal Affairs, Besfort Lamallari.

Also participating were the Director General of the State Police, Skënder Hita, the Director of the National Civil Protection Agency, Haki Çako, and the Director of the National Emergency Service, Skënder Brataj.

"The Ministry of Internal Affairs has drafted a detailed plan of measures to prevent fires and strengthen operational capacities during the summer. This plan aims to minimize fire incidents, increase timely response, and protect life, property, and the environment."

"Checks will be carried out in hotels, resorts, restaurants, beach bars and other high-risk entities to verify security measures and evacuation plans. There is no room for formality in this process. There is only room for responsibility," stressed Minister Lamallari.

Another focus of the minister's speech was the toughening of criminal measures against arsonists, following recent changes to the Criminal Code.

"Fires are not prevented only by the state. They are also prevented by community awareness, by the careful farmer, by the responsible tourist operator, and by every citizen who understands that protecting the territory is a shared responsibility."

"I want to make it clear: there will be zero tolerance for deliberate arson and anyone who violates the natural wealth and safety of our communities ," Lamallari declared, adding that in the most serious cases, sentences for arsonists can reach up to 30 years in prison.

In his speech, Minister Lamallari praised the work and sacrifice of Fire Protection and Rescue personnel, emphasizing that this is a vital service for public safety and the protection of life, property and the environment.

"The Fire and Rescue Service is one of the most important pillars of public safety in the country. It is a service that citizens always see where there is danger, where there is emergency and where sacrifice is required," said Lamallari. The Minister emphasized that support for this service has increased significantly, announcing that funding for 2025 has increased to 2.8 billion lek, from 2.3 billion lek a year ago.

"We have advanced the modernization of the fleet, supported the improvement of financial treatment and initiated new steps to increase operational capacities throughout the country," he declared.

According to Lamallari, currently around 170 firefighting vehicles operate in local structures, while 130 new vehicles are planned, as well as the construction of 4 new fire stations in Përrenjas, Mat, Patos and Mirdita. Focusing on the measures for the summer season, the minister underlined the importance of preparedness and coordination between responsible institutions.

"We expect each municipality to have a clear action plan according to the specifics of its territory. We expect real coordination between firefighting structures, the State Police, Civil Emergencies, the forestry service and local civil protection structures ," said Lamallari.
