Athens was shocked by the powerful explosion of a bomb placed near the Ministry of Labor and a bank. The explosion caused considerable material damage, while the windows were broken both in the Ministry of Labor, which is located in front of the explosion site, and in other neighboring buildings.
The act of terror was preceded by two phone calls from unknown persons who warned about the placement of the bomb. Responsibility for the terrorist act was taken by the newly created organization "Self-Defense of the Revolutionary Class".
Initially they said that the bomb was placed in the Ministry of Labor and later in the next phone call they said that the bomb was in the branch of Alphabank which is located in front of the ministry and which is currently closed for renovation. According to the police, the bomb exploded at 01:29 local time.
The first police officers who arrived at the scene found a bag hanging from the bars. The area was cordoned off and shortly afterwards the explosion occurred, which only caused material damage. After the explosion, engineering experts approached the site very carefully for fear of a second bomb, but found nothing.
The area where the explosion occurred is still surrounded by police tapes. The police announced that they have stopped the circulation of vehicles in the area.
