From today, June 1, 2022, disposable plastic bags will be banned in our country, as an effort to protect the environment.
Albania's initiative to ban disposable plastic bags was praised in Vienna, during the Tratolow ministerial's work. In this meeting between the Ministers of the Western Balkans, Turkey and the Minister of Austria, Mirela Kumbaro presented the initiative of Albania to ban disposable plastic bags.
The law banning disposable plastic bags was approved by the Albanian Parliament on March 17th, and enters into force on June 1st. This law provides for the prohibition of the production, import and trade of plastic holding bags as well as oxo-degradable or oxo-biodegradable plastic holding bags with a bag wall thickness of not less than 70 microns on each side, with a carrying capacity of not less than 10 kilograms and measuring not less than 50 cm long and 24 cm wide.
Controls will be exercised by a number of institutions, such as the Customs Directorate to prohibit the import of bags that do not meet the criteria, the Inspectorate of Supervision and Markets to control their trade and the National Environmental Agency for bag manufacturers under certain parameters .
The bags harm the landscape, the ecosystem and the health of the citizens, so the head of tourism and environment, invited the citizens and businesses to refuse their use. After the approval of this decision, the fine of every business that trades with plastic bags under 35 microns with a value from 1 million to 1.5 million new lek is foreseen. These measures are primarily for manufacturers, large importers, but the law does not exclude even the smallest traders: supermarkets, markets, shops, or any entity that after two months will trade goods with these packaging.
