The director of the Saranda maternity hospital, Tajar Lako, spoke about the case of the incident that happened the day before where a young mother jumped from the second floor of the hospital with her newborn baby.
He says that the birth went normally, but he was committed to contacting her family members so that the baby had suitable conditions in the first days of life.
"On June 28 around 02:20 he was born from a normal delivery. He is the sixth child. The birth went very well and the treatment of the mother and the child continued in the following days by the respective doctors and everything about their health was normal. On the third day, looking at the condition of the mother, who seems a bit retarded, we could not find her husband because he did not come to the hospital, I told the nurses that if they saw her husband coming to the maternity hospital, he should contact me.
The entire staff has been dedicated to the case with milk, clothes for the baby, provided by the hospital. Since these are people who came to the city in the season just to beg, then I could not take the child out of the maternity hospital because I did not know the living conditions and where to send them", says the doctor.
He says that he communicated with the director of the hospital and then sent a letter to the social service office, where they learned that the address of the family in question was sometimes in Durrës, sometimes in Berat and sometimes in Gjirokastër. Meanwhile, the health condition of mother and child is currently good.
"Situated in these conditions, I communicate with the director of the hospital and send a letter to the municipality to the social service office, even the head of human resources has spoken about the case and their answer was that their address was sometimes in Durrës, sometimes in Berat times in Gjirokastër and we were not sure where and were waiting to get an exact address where we could take them.
This is because I couldn't take a two-three-day-old child out into the street with temperatures of 40 during the day or cold at night, since they don't have a home. Now the gynecologist, orthopedist, resuscitator deal with the mother, while I deal with the treatment of the baby. The baby enjoys health", he says.
The doctor explains that the mother crawled out of the window protecting the child with her body, which according to him shows that she tried to leave the hospital and not commit suicide.
"There was nothing but the mother, after crawling out of the window into the square, was found to have the child tied to her chest and stomach to protect her. From what can be seen here, there was no attempt by the mother to commit suicide, but an attempt to leave the hospital" , says pediatrician Tajar Lako.
