The mystery of the death of the 27-year-old Albanian woman in Italy, the last
Ermela Muhametaj

"Can we meet at the office today?" This is the message that Ermela Muhametaj, the 27-year-old of Albanian origin found dead under the "Sheriff's Bridge", in the Larino area of Italy, on the evening of April 28.

She had sent the message early in the morning to her lawyer who had been following her and her husband through divorce proceedings for some time.

Shortly after 8 a.m. on Monday, the young woman, mother of an almost 8-year-old child, asked the lawyer for a meeting to talk, apparently, about the separation from her husband, with whom she had not lived together for several months.

After learning that the lawyer was out of the country, Ermela insisted that she could meet at least one representative of the law firm. The meeting was scheduled for the afternoon, but the woman never went to the law firm's offices.

This is one of the elements that has come to light in recent hours, which raises new doubts about the hypothesis of her suicide.

The attempt to take legal action, the desire to talk, and even the rush to see a lawyer seem incompatible with such a desperate and planned gesture.

In the town of Montecilfone, disappointment is increasingly giving way to disbelief.

Ermela was a woman who was appreciated by all who knew her. Described by neighbors and acquaintances as “educated, reserved, intelligent, deeply attached to her son”. The child lived with her and that child was her reason for living. “He was his life”, – confirm those who knew her in the village. The same is confirmed by Ermela’s posts on social networks, one of which was the one on the occasion of her son’s birthday: “My son is the beat of my heart, the reason for my every breath, my completeness, my salvation. Simply my everything […] You will grow up to the point that I will no longer be able to hold you in my arms, but there will always be a place for you in my heart”.

The body was found by her husband, a 52-year-old craftsman, hanging from a tree under the overpass connecting Larino to Bifernina.

He told police he had gone out to look for her, concerned about her mental state. He raised the alarm at around 9pm. The death was confirmed by doctors, who arrived at the scene along with the fire brigade and the carabinieri.

Prosecutors are working non-stop to reconstruct Ermela's final hours.

The Albanian woman's mobile phone was seized and will be analyzed to obtain useful elements: messages, contacts, movements.

The questioning of the couple's family, friends and acquaintances continues.

Her husband was summoned to be heard once again. The Larino Public Prosecutor's Office has opened a criminal case for "incitement to suicide", as a necessary step to continue the investigation. At the moment there are no suspects.

"At this moment, the evidence points to suicide," confirmed prosecutor Elvira Antonelli, "but only the autopsy will reveal any deviation from this hypothesis."

The autopsy will be carried out on Friday, May 2, at the morgue of the San Timoteo hospital, by the team of the Institute of Forensic Medicine of Foggia. Along with the legal experts, there will also be an expert appointed by the husband, in his capacity as a relative of the victim. This expertise, judicial sources explain, could bring a turning point. It will be the scientific findings that will confirm hanging as the certain cause of death or indicate any anomaly.

Investigators – but there is currently no official confirmation of this – are also suspected of having found a suicide note written by the woman. According to the same sources, it was only a few lines, perhaps left with the intention of justifying the gesture. However, this element is also the subject of investigations. In investigative circles, the possibility that the message was written in a moment of particular vulnerability or even under pressure is not ruled out.

There is also an extreme hypothesis, but not completely ruled out, that Ermela may have been pushed or forced to write those words, perhaps after threats or strong psychological pressure. Investigations will clarify its origin, authenticity and true meaning. In the town of Montecilfone, pain is intertwined with questions. Ermela had worked for a short time in the reception of immigrants.

She had been perfectly integrated into the community and her death has caused shock and disappointment. “Her death leaves an irreplaceable void, especially for her little Domenico,” wrote Mayor Giorgio Manes, “Ermela was a special person, known by all for her education, joy and generosity.”

Many people find it difficult to accept that a mother so attached to her son, attentive, responsible and determined, could have decided to leave him forever. For now, there is only silence and a waiting full of hope and anxiety. The hope that the truth, whatever it is, will come to light.
