Nearly 45,000 girls aged 13-20 have received the HPV vaccine over the past 5 years. According to the Ministry of Health, 10,000 of them have been vaccinated this year alone.

From January 2026, the National HPV Vaccination Calendar will also include boys aged 13.

Doctor Rovena Daja notes that over 150 types of HPV virus are known, most of which are not dangerous.

"We have viruses 6 and 11 that are the causes of genital warts, both in men and women. Viruses 16 and 18 are the ones that in 70% of cases cause cervical cancer in women. But, HPV is more dangerous in men as well, as they are carriers, transmitters, and in most cases also cause genital cancer in men and the pharynx," said Daja.

Daja added that the HPV vaccine has been applied to females at the age of 13 for more than five years.

" In addition to vaccination for girls aged 13, the IHP also organizes additional vaccination for all girls who have not applied this vaccine since they were 13. In total, the girls who have applied this vaccine from the beginning to today are over 45 thousand and during 2025 alone they are over 10 thousand.

But, despite all the problems that have been seen in men, the proposal is that from January 2026 we will also start applying this vaccine to men who will turn 13 in 2026. The safest way to protect ourselves against HPV is to apply this vaccine before we come into contact at the age of 13. A vaccine that is licensed is used in all countries of the world, and is offered free of charge at every health center within the framework of the national vaccination calendar , "concluded Daja.
