Elbasan, like all of Albania in 1997, was in chaos; in every neighborhood, residents had set up checkpoints, armed to the teeth.

They saw this as an attempt to protect their community from the gangs that roamed freely in the city. The state had lost control.

One of these checkpoints was set up in the “Vullnetari” neighborhood, behind the former cinema of the same name, near the “Abdyl Myzyri” school. It was an improvised, but necessary, checkpoint. At the time, this was the only mechanism to prevent the entry of dangerous elements.

On the evening of May 21, around 11:00 PM, Dritan Kateshi, Taulant Balliu and Ndriçim Sadushi appeared at the checkpoint. After the car was stopped, a verbal altercation occurred. The checkpoint guards refused to let these individuals pass and enter the neighborhood.

It was a firm decision: the neighborhood did not accept strangers, especially in the middle of the night. After a few minutes of tension, the car turned back. But the situation did not end there.

Just a few meters away, Tan Kateshi's group opened fire on the checkpoint. A volley of Kalashnikovs was fired at the young men guarding the neighborhood. The volley of bullets killed Erion Derraj and Gëzim Myftari, both no more than 23 years old.

"Organized crime would find its way out, it would continue to operate. So it was reshaped into another dimension and, from armed gangs, it turned into criminal groups that began to develop activity by laundering criminal proceeds into legal activities, which in fact took on another form of organization," said Saida Dollani, president of the Special Court of Appeal.

The news spread quickly. Within minutes, all the boys from the “Banesat” neighborhood took to the streets armed. It was an instant decision – they were not going to let this incident go unanswered. They set off in pursuit of the car that had fired, marking the beginning of a clash that would lead to the formation of the so-called “Kateshi Gang.”

The boys of the “Vullnetari” neighborhood, known as “Banesat”, received information about the location of Tan Kateshi and his friends, who had taken refuge in the latter’s apartment. The group of armed young men headed for the building where Tan Kateshi lived. The building was located near Pyjora, just 100 meters from the police station.

"Initially, the crime is simple, in what is known in slang as street crime. It is not distinguished by a particular form of cooperation; it is a simple cooperation that is usually connected on the spot," said Kreshnik Myftari, a law professor.

Tan Kateshi dhe banda e tij u larguan nga Elbasani. Qyteti i tyre nuk ishte më i sigurt për ta.

Për disa javë u fshehën në Berat. Atje thuhet se kanë qenë në mbrojtjen e Altin Dardhës, një nga personazhet më të frikshëm të vendit në atë kohë.

“Historia e Elbasanit është një histori krimi që lidhet me shumë qytete të tjera. Personazhe problematik, me begraund kriminal, kanë qenë të lidhur pothuajse me çdo bandë në Shqipëri”, u shpreh Kreshnik Myftari, pedagog i drejtësisë.

Lufta mes “Bandës së Kateshit” dhe djemve të lagjes “Banesa” ishte në fillim. Hakmarrja nuk ishte shuar ende.

Një pasdite, tre persona të lidhur me Kateshin, Alfir Sadushi, Arben Shkodrani dhe Kastriot Dervishi, u rikthyen në lagjen “Banesa”. Ata shkuan aty me pretekstin se donin të vizitonin një mik për të parë pëllumba, një pasion që ndanin mes tyre. Por në atë kohë, çdo lëvizje shihej me dyshim. Kthimi i tyre në atë lagje u perceptua si një provokim apo sfidë.

“Ishte mentaliteti kohës ku duke u marrë ndaj padrejtësisë, tregonte edhe një lloj rrezikshmërie edhe për personin pastaj që mos bëhej targëtim për grupe të tjera kriminale, mos kishte probleme me grupe të tjera, plus edhe opinioni publik”, u shpreh Kreshnik Myftari, pedagog i drejtësisë.

Sapo makina e tyre u shfaq, djemtë e “Banesave” reaguan pa hezitim. Një breshëri plumbash goditi automjetin. Sadushi dhe Shkodrani u vranë në vend, ndërsa Dervishi mbeti i plagosur rëndë.

Ishte një akt i menjëhershëm hakmarrjeje, një mesazh i qartë: lagjja “Banesa” kishte tjetër zot. Lajmi i asaj ngjarjeje u përhap shpejt në Elbasan, duke ndezur edhe më shumë tensionet. Konflikti sapo kishte marrë një kthesë akoma më të ashpër…

Shkuan t’i vinin gjobë, por… si përfunduan në viktima anëtarët e bandës ‘Kateshi’

Pas këtij veprimi, banda i lë afat 24 orë familjes Kuçi për dorëzimin e parave, por sërish, lekët nuk u dorëzuan.

Më 14 gusht, rreth orës 17:00, anëtarët e bandës organizohen në banesën e Ndriçim Sadushit, që ishte edhe baza e grupit.

Të armatosur me automatikë, granata dhe kundërtank, ata u nisën me disa automjete në drejtim të vilës së familjes Kuçi, e cila ndodhet në rrethrrotullimin e Luleve, në fillim të rrugës që të çon për në Fushë Mbret. Sapo mbërritën, pasi rrethuan banesën e Ramadan Kuçit, nisën sulmin me breshëri automatike, granata dhe kundërtank.

Nga këqyrja e vendit të ngjarjes, më datë 15/08/1997, rezulton se janë përdorur shumë lloje armësh në drejtim të banesës së familjes Kuçi dhe nga drejtime të ndryshme, si dhe kanë marrë pjesë shumë persona në afërsi të kësaj banese. Kjo provohet edhe nga makinat e të pandehurve të lëna në vendngjarje.

“Një pjesë shumë e madhe e njerëzve nuk kanë denoncuar, kanë pasur frikë. Ka pasur denoncim vetëm nga një familje që u sulmua nga banda e Kateshit, por ka shumë biznesmenë që nuk kanë denoncuar”, u shpreh avokati Alban Qafa.

"I remember it as an event where several people from the same family organized themselves to protect the entire family, to protect their property, to protect their dignity. Because these people were attacked, there is no doubt that the law exempts them from criminal liability," said law professor Kreshnik Myftari.

The gang did not know that they were confronted by a trained soldier who organized defense from inside the house. This event is typical of a Hollywood movie script. Hiding behind the window of his apartment, this person eliminated 5 members of the notorious gang, while three others were injured.

The victims of that event were: Arben Pepalloshi, Arben Jabi, Neritan Haxhiasllani, Dritan Sadushi and Besim Erosi – all members of Kateshi's gang. Taulant Balliu, Gjergj Dedja and Dritan Kateshi himself were also injured in this confrontation.
