Ilir Meta

The Constitutional Court has set April 8, at 11:00, for the review of former President Ilir Meta's appeal against the decision that keeps him in "prison arrest".

The review will be conducted based on documents presented by the defense, but without the personal presence of former President Meta.

Meta has requested through his lawyer that the Constitutional Court declare the February 27 decision of the Supreme Court, which confirmed the security measure of "prison arrest", incompatible with the Constitution.

He also requests the annulment of the decisions of the previous courts: the decision of the Special Court of Appeal on November 19, 2024 and the decisions of the First Instance on October 20 and 23, 2024.

The case is related to SPAK's investigations into Meta and his ex-wife, Monika Kryemadhi, on charges including corruption, money laundering and failure to declare assets. Meta has been in custody since October 21, 2024, the day he was arrested.

The Constitutional Court's decision is expected to examine in detail the legality of the security measure and the respect for the former president's constitutional rights. The document-based review will include all legal arguments presented by the defense and will analyze whether the decisions of previous courts were taken in accordance with the law and the Constitution.
