And then when he thinks he is invulnerable and has everything in hand, he starts to make mistakes, he becomes irresistible.

At this moment, the clashes begin. A game of chess begins, with the elimination of soldiers, until at one point the king becomes checkmate.

This is also the story of Ervis Martinaj. A name that today, even though it's been 2 years since the family reported him missing, has changed more than when he was moving freely.

But for him the story stretches even longer in time. A story that we can consider as the time before and after his disappearance.

For years he was considered as the "king of gambling" and later as the "lord of crime". The influence it had made it acquire a legendary, even mythical status, for the police, crime, but also for the citizens themselves. A character with strong connections in the police, justice and politics.

Ervis Martinaj is a man that few knew before 2013. It must even be said that until that year, he lived a quiet life. With seemingly regular businesses and no problems with the Police. Or at least it seemed that way. Year after year he reached the top, both in business and in crime. Until one day it disappeared. Since August 9, 2022, when he was reported missing by his uncle, it has been 21 months since Ervis Martinaj's fate, no one is able to say anything for sure.

But although he appears to be physically gone, his name during these months was curved more than anyone else's.

It is almost impossible that the name of Ervis Martinaj does not appear in the most important files that SPAK has recently.

He is mentioned both as an accused party and as an injured party. As someone who is suspected of having ordered assassinations, but also as someone who escaped several assassinations. Perhaps today, when nothing is known about his fate, many other crime figures find it even easier to mention his name. They point the finger at him, maybe even for crimes that he may not have committed or ordered. But no matter how cautious one sees such evidence, it is certain that some people were killed because of him and some in his place.

THE RISE OF A MYTH

E para është ajo e “Plumbit të artë”, për të cilën ishte në kërkim para se të denoncohej i zhdukur, ndërsa e dyta është e korrikut të vitit 2023, kur po bëhej gati një vit nga denoncimi i familjarëve të tij. Edhe në këtë rast ai hetohej për porosi vrasjesh, në kuadër të operacionit “Metamorfoza”.

Prokuroria e Posaçme përfundoi hetimet për këtë dosje më 15 prill 2024 dhe i komunikoi akuzat biznesmenit Pëllumb Gjoka, ish-shefit të Operacionales, Oltion Bistri, ish-prokurorit Xhevahir Lita, Behar Bajrit dhe 3 personave të tjerë. Bajri pritet të gjykohet me dyshimet se ka qenë organizator i vrasjes së shtetasit Gjin Boriçi dhe në bashkëpunim me personat e tjerë ka siguruar kushte për 2 atentate që nuk janë realizuar. Nga ana tjetër edhe Pëllumb Gjoka do të përballet me dyshimet se ka kërkuar ekzekutimin e një personi dhe ka dhënë ndihmë në organizimin e atentateve. Për ish-drejtorin e Forcave Operacionale në Policinë e Shtetit, SPAK ka rrëzuar akuzën e “Shpërdorimit të detyrës”, por ka rënduar pozitat e tij penale duke dërguar në gjyq për korrupsion, pastrim parash dhe nxjerre të sekretit hetimor. Nga ana tjetër, ish-prokurori i Shkodrës, Xhevahir Lita, akuzohet për korrupsion, ndërsa prokuroria në përfundim të hetimeve nuk e konsideron si  pjesë e  grupit kriminal, duke lehtësuar edhe pozitat e tij  ligjore. Për këtë dosje është ndarë një tjetër procedim për personat që janë në kërkim përfshirë edhe Ervis Martinajn, por edhe raste të tjera kriminale që janë ende duke u hetuar. Hetimet nisën prej vitit 2019 pas informacioneve të siguruara nga autoritetet holandeze belge dhe ato franceze që zbërthyer komunikimet mes anëtarëve të grupit ne rrjetin “enchro chat” dhe “sky”.

Nga ana thetër, më 29 janar 2024 ka kaluar për gjykim edhe dosja “Plumbi i artë”, pjesë e të cilës ishte po ashtu Ervis Martinaj dhe 19 persona të tjerë, që dolën pas dëshmisë së Nuredin Dumanit. Ndërsa janë pushuar hetimet për Florenc Çekrezin për akuzën e grupit të strukturuar kriminal, por vijojnë për armëmbajtje pa leje. Ai u akuzua fillimisht për vendosjen e eksplozivit në banesën e Talo Çelës, por rezultoi se nuk ka qenë i përfshirë në këtë ngjarje. Ndërsa për Talo Çelën hetimet janë zgjatur edhe me 6 muaj në lidhje me akuzën “Vrasje me paramendim”, në dëm të shtetasit Irfan Hazizi. Kjo dosje është çështja më voluminoze në Prokurorinë e Posaçme pasi pjesë e saj janë disa procedime penale, për 18 ngjarje kriminale mes të cilave vrasje , grabitje me armë, vendosje tritoli, trafik të lëndëve narkotike deri tek dhuna në familje. Pjesë e dosjes janë disa bashkëpuntorë drejtësisë, mes të cilëve Nuredin Dumani, Skerdi Tasen e Euglen Halilin. Dumani ishte nisur për të kryer një vrasje në Elbasan në mars të vitit 2022, kur ra pre e një atentati e mbeti edhe i plagosur. Pas arrestimit të tij dhe bashkëpunimit me Prokurorinë, SPAK lëshoi 32 urdhra arresti ku u vunë në pranga 20 persona dhe u shpallën në kërkim 12 të tjerë. Mes personave të shpallur në kërkim janë emra të njohur si Talo Çela, Suel Çela, Agron Mehja e Ervis Martinaj.

Nga ana tjetër, përveç tri dosjeve, emri i Ervis Martinajt, pa çka se rëzulton i zhdukur, madje burime policore, edhe pse konfidencialisht kanë dyshime se mund të jetë vrarë, del në skenë edhe në tri vrasje.

 Atentati ndaj Fation Muratit në “Don Bosko”

Atëherë kur të gjithë, madje edhe Policia, po mendonte se grupi kriminal i Ervis Martinajt ishte dobësuar, sinjali i rizgjimit u dha nga breshëritë e kallashnikovëve. Në një rrugicë të errët të “Don Boskos” në Tiranë, plumbat e kallashit, të nisur për të larë hesapet mes grupeve kriminale, i morën jetën një gruaje të pafajshme. Ndonëse rezulton i zhdukur prej 9 gushtit të vitit 2022, mbrëmjen e 12 marsit 2023 u shfaq fantazma e Ervis Martinajt. Emri i tij doli në skenë duke sjellë jo pak përshtjellim për të gjithë ata që për 8 muaj e mendonin edhe të vdekur.

Fatjon Murati may have unsettled accounts with other people, but it seems that the accounts with Ervis Martinaj's group were the ones that burdened him the most. He received the message on the evening of March 12, 2023. For the Police and the Prosecutor's Office, the message was clear and all the data leads to the Kurbin area. But what reappeared after a long time was the clash between criminal groups. And with it, it seems that the shadow of Ervis Martinaj reappeared.

Fatjon Murat's name came to the fore in August 2022, when a classified document listed him as the first among 6 people to be questioned about the Fushë-Kruja massacre. At that time, the Prosecutor's Office of Kruja requested the questioning of several people in connection with the assassination of July 17, 2022, where the cousin of Ervis Martinaj was among the three killed. Among the names that the prosecution wanted to be questioned was Endrit Dokle, whom Ervis Martinaj wanted killed, at least based on Nuredin Duman's statements. Although they were asked about this event, as persons who might have knowledge, the Prosecutor's Office could not prove anything and they were all released. When a counterattack was expected, which would take revenge for the murder of Brilant Martinaj, less than a month after the event, Ervis Martinaj was reported missing.

One piece of evidence that links the assassination of Fation Murataj to Ervis Martinaj is the name of a suspect who, although he was in prison when the incident happened, was indirectly related to him. It is about Nikoll Sherrnik, 31 years old, from Fushë - Kuqja, who is known as one of Brilant Martinaj's close friends. In June 2023, the Tirana Court set the security measure of "prison arrest" for Nikol Sherrnik, suspected of being involved in the "Don Bosco" incident, where the bartender Mimoza Paja lost her life. The measure was communicated to him in his cell while he has been under arrest since August 2022. Sherrnik was caught in an armored vehicle while moving armed, while the Police announced that they had prevented an assassination attempt at that time. Sherrnik is accused of having provided the perpetrators of the murder of Mimoza Paja with the foreign license plates that were placed on the "BMW" vehicle, with which the executioners committed the crime and then burned it. The number plate turns out to have been obtained in Germany by Sherrnik, which was confirmed through the order letter received from the German authorities and the testimony of an Albanian who explained that Sherrnik received 3 license plates in Germany. According to the prosecution, he saved these license plates to use later in criminal events and for this reason he is suspected of the criminal offense of "creating the conditions for the commission of murder". He himself has refused to give explanations about who are the people to whom he handed over the license plate. Sherrnik was charged in December 2020, after allegedly giving a vehicle to Brilant Martinaj, who at that time was accused of murdering police officer Xjulio Prela. A month after Brilant Martinaj was executed in the Fushë-Kruja overpass attempt together with his two friends, Besmir Hoxha and Dikler Vata, Nikollë Sherrniku was arrested while driving around with military ammunition and an armored vehicle, while it is suspected that he had set out to commit an assassination attempt.

The attack on Gentian Gejtje in Larushka

The assassination that failed at midnight on July 4, 2023, when an innocent person lost his life, was carried out at 4:20 p.m. on March 15, 2024. It seems that the same perpetrators tried again and this time they executed 43-year-old Gentian Bejtja. According to the data provided by the investigation group, 4 people are suspected to have participated in the event. They approached with the vehicle "Land Rover", in which they traveled from Fushë - Kruja, in the direction of the village of Larushke. The one driving the car stopped near the main road, while the other three, dressed in black and masked, approached on foot towards Bejte's house, which was only a few meters away. It seems that they had accurate information about the moment when they had to approach, since at that time the gate was open and they entered the courtyard where Gentian Beytja was located. As soon as the perpetrators saw their target, they shot the three in bursts, with at least 50 bullets, leaving him dead on the spot.

During the investigation, it was found that after the incident, the perpetrators left on the Larushkë - Thumanë road axis, after passing the Fushë Krujë overpass, they turned left and burned the vehicle above in the village of Hasan. From the investigation, it has been proven that the perpetrators left with a black "Golf" type vehicle, without a license plate on the back, following the route from the place where the vehicle was burned in the direction of the main road Thumanë-Fushë Krujë, they deviated to the right at the crossing of Fushë - Kruja and left in the direction of the village of Bubq. From the analysis of the information, as well as the inspection of the security cameras, it became possible to identify the "Golf" type vehicle with license plate AB 960 GG, owned by Edison Haxhiu, born in Milot and resident in Tirana. Likewise, it turned out that this vehicle was also used by Ilir Beqaraj, also known by the surnames Brahimi and Mançellari, born in Milot and living in Tirana.

Ilir Brahimi, suspected of being involved in this event, is the cousin of Ylli Brahimi, who escaped 2 assassination attempts in 2021 and 2022, in Milot, a name that is directly related to Ervis Martinaj. This connection increased the suspicions of the investigators that Martinaj's people were behind the murder of Gentian Bejte. Bejte's father testified about a meeting between his son and Ervis Martinaj about a year and a half before the disappearance. At that time, Martinaj had doubts that Bejtja was one of the executors of Paulin Gjergji and Bujar Lika, in May 2020, but after the meeting it was clarified. According to Gani Bejte, Martinaj was convinced that Gentiani had nothing to do with the event, based on the physiognomy of the perpetrators that appeared in the security camera footage.

After this event, it is suspected that Bejtja settled the disagreements with Ervis Martinaj, without which it was later rumored about a betrayal and possible participation of the 43-year-old in the event when Brilat Martinaj was killed.

But on the other hand, the Police has another track, apparently stronger, that connects the murder of Gentian Bejtja with Sidorel Prendi, or as he was known recently, Roan Brahimi. The person arrested for the murder of Bejtja, Ilir Beqaraj, or Ilir Brahimi, is Roan Brahimi's brother-in-law.

The attack on Roan Brahim in Athens

A 32-year-old Albanian was executed on the evening of May 9 in the middle of Athens. The victim was quickly identified. His name is Roan Brahimi, also known as Sidorel Prendi, from the village of Pllana i Lezha. He was shot by two people riding a motorcycle in the presence of his partner Katerina Beqo, 37 years old, and his minor daughter, when he was waiting to pick her up from the park. The serious incident happened after 21:30 at the intersection of "Messoloniu" and "Tsaldari" streets.

The couple's 7-year-old son, who was playing in the park with his grandmother, according to eyewitnesses and his mother, managed to see everything. The executioners were reportedly watching the victim's family's every move, and apparently reserved a parking spot for Roan Brahim to ensnare him. The perpetrators saw their target arriving and then started the engine while leaving the scene. In this way, the killers have left a parking space free that would serve as "bait" for the 32-year-old, who parked the vehicle there waiting to take the child. The perpetrators drove around the square and returned to the scene, where one of them shot Brahim without worrying about passers-by. According to the data made public by the Greek media, Roan Brahimi had arrived there 3 days ago, while earlier he had been in Dubai.

For the Albanian Police, Brahimi was a wanted person, but it was not even managed to accompany him for questioning. Roan Brahimi was known as one of Ervis Martinaj's declared rivals. His murder in Athens brought the name of a missing person to the fore again.

The person who was arrested as being involved in Gentian Bejte's murder, Ilir Brahimi, is the brother-in-law of Roan Brahimi. And although Ilir Brahimi is the son of Ylli Brahimi's uncle, known as Vis Martinaj's right-hand man, it is known that there was a rift between them. So much so that together with Roan Brahim they had become enemies of Ervis Martinaj and Ylli Brahim.

Roan Brahimi was initially wanted in 2021, for a serious incident that happened in a bar in Zejmen, Lezha, on November 13 of that year. In relation to the event, the Lezha Police arrested a 21-year-old man at that time, as he was suspected of collaborating with Ramazan Rraja, Roan Brahim and Alesio Dobrozi, who were suspected of being the authors of that event. Armed and wearing masks, they entered the bar to find the cousin of the bar owner, with whom they had a conflict. Ardit Luli was arrested, who was accused of hiding the three perpetrators after the incident so that they would not be found by the police. The police said at the time that the three suspects, including Roan Brahimi, had left the country, heading for Dubai.

Later, the name of Roan Brahim appeared on the scene for another serious event, when he was required to testify as a person who knew about the assassination of July 17, 2022, where Brilant Martinaj was killed. In the order issued a few hours after the event, Roan Brahim's name was listed as the fourth among six people to be found and questioned for the massacre with three killed. On the other hand, he was also suspected of two assassination attempts against Ylli Brahim, Ervis Martinaj's right-hand man. The first attack took place on January 14, 2021, in the center of Milot, this Ylli Brahimi was injured, while in the second, on July 22, 2022, Klisman Preçi was killed.

The police had information at that time that Roan Brahimi had a conflict with Ylli Brahimi, because due to a gambling debt, he had delivered him to one of Ervis Martinaj's bases in Fushë-Kuqe. In that place, Roan Brahimi was brutally beaten and taken out bleeding. After leaving that place, he swore that he would never forgive Ylli Brahim.

EMPOWERMENT OF ERVIS MARTINAJ

Ervis Martinaj, since August 9, 2022, has been reported missing by his family members. Known as the king of gambling, he has been accused of serious crimes from time to time. He was investigated and even arrested, but he always managed to get his innocence. Initially, the name of Ervis Martinaj was mentioned by the investigative group in October 2013, when Elvis Doçi was executed in the area of ​​"Community of Paris", in Tirana. At that time, the "End of Folly" operation had just started and the Police had blocked gambling machines and machines, which damaged Ervis Martinaj's business, as it turned out later.

The victim, Elvis Doçi, who had sold several slot machines to Martinaj, was suspected of knowing about the operation that the Police would undertake in the fight against illegality. The investigative group, based on this information, investigated Ervis Martinaj for several months, but failed to find any evidence implicating him in Doci's murder.

But this was not the only murder, for which he was kept under surveillance, as Martinaj's name came up in the assassination attempt where the banker Artan Santo was killed. After the operative information, the Police said that the engine that was used by the killers of Santos could have been hidden in the warehouses of Ervis Martinaj in the village of Fushë-Kuqe in Laçi. Police operatives searched his warehouses on June 27, 2014, where they found two suits that later turned out not to be the same as those of the perpetrators of the murder. However, gambling machines were found and seized there.

In the internal systems of the State Police, the name of Ervis Martinaj is filed in various events, from murder to the threat of senior Police leaders. On October 20, 2013, at the height of the "End of Folly" operation, against illegal gambling, Ervis Martinaj threatened the head of the special department "Shqiponja" in the Tirana police department, Engjëllush Avdulaj, that he would kill him. As soon as the "Shqiponja" department and the police station number 3 of Tirana had seized about 400 gambling machines and luxury cars in a warehouse of Ervis Martinaj, he called the head of this department, commissioner Engjëllush Avdulajn, and threatened to eliminate him. Commissioner Avdulaj filed a criminal report for this case. He denounced Ervis Martinaj for threatening his life. The police initiated criminal proceedings against Martinaj, who was 33 years old at the time, but did not accompany him in any case. Later the event was forgotten and no one was held responsible.

In November 2015, he was at the top of the list of 5 people that the Tirana Police announced as wanted for the murder of Enton Nikaj. According to the Prosecutor's Office file, Ervis Martinaj together with his friends, after finishing a lunch in a bar in Lizna, went out to leave, getting into his car. After he started driving, he saw the owner of the bar, Ismet Gaxherri, who was accompanied by Enton Nikaj, entering the parking lot. As soon as he saw this person, Ervis Martinaj immediately stopped his car and first he got out, followed by the people who were with him, Emiljano Tasho, Bujar Hasani and ex-policeman Mirsad Kuçana.

First, an argument started with harsh tones, then the guns were pulled from their belts and Martinaj's friends hit Gaxherri and Nikaj with the barrels of their pistols. The latter was also hit with punches and kicks by Ervis Martinaj, Emiljano Tasho and Mirsad Kuçana. In a cold-blooded moment, the Prosecutor's Office claimed that the defendants executed the citizen Enton Nikaj and Emiljano Tasho carried out such an action. However, the accused claimed in court that the gun was fired by mistake and it was not intended to kill him.

In conclusion, the Prosecution requested 121 years of imprisonment for the accused persons, but the Court sentenced them to only 21 years in total. For this incident, Ervis Martinaj was sentenced to 1 year in prison for failing to report a crime, a decision he appealed with the claim that a person who was accused of murder could not be accused of failing to report a crime. This, according to him, was like implicating himself. Even this event was forgotten like many others that were closed later and will be closed in the future. At least for 3 years.

THE FALL FROM THE THRONE BEGINS

October 4, 2018, at 21:29, marks the beginning of the end of Ervis Martinaj. This moment broke the peace established by a silent agreement between two criminal groups in Tirana. The first was led by Ervis Martinaj and the second by Ervin Mata.

This clash with weapons, in the well-known bar in the area of ​​the former Block in Tirana, caused one person to be killed and two injured. Ervis Martinaj himself was also injured, who was then arrested. But for a while. Just like all the others who first stayed on the run and then surrendered one after the other. After several weeks in the cells, they were all released. Including Ervin Mata and Mevjol Bilon, who was the person who fired the gun. Today all the protagonists are out. As for the fate of Ervis Martinaj, from the denunciation as missing, nothing is known yet.

Since that date, there has been talk of enmity between Martinaj and Mata. In the testimony given about that event, Ervis Martinaj said that he had never had any problems with Ervin Mata, and even said that he had grown up with Ervin's father.

Ervin Mata himself surrendered to the Tirana Police in March 2019, at the same time when Ervis Martinaj was released on bail. But Mata did not stay in detention for more than 2 days, after the Court changed the measure and he was released.

From this moment, when both were free, things would not be the same as before for Ervis Martinaj and Ervin Mata. There was no more peace between them and this was proven in the following years. And the reason was not only the murder in the area of ​​the former Block, in Tirana, but also drug trafficking. In a short period of time, murders and failed assassinations took place, which remained without a perpetrator, but which the investigations connected with these characters. Both of them started to strengthen themselves by bringing close to them effective and even Police leaders.

THE SOLDIERS ARE KILLED, THE "KING" IS KILLED

On the evening of August 27, 2019, ex-policeman Santiago Malko was executed inside his car in Tirana. At the end of the investigations, after taking the case to trial, the Prosecutor's Office said that his murder had occurred because of the rivalry in gambling between two criminal groups. But between the lines in the file and many testimonies of a parallel investigation carried out by the Prosecutor's Office of Vlora, it actually turned out that Malko was killed in the impossibility of eliminating Ervis Martinaj. This, after several plans to kill him had failed.

The assassination of Santiago Malko was planned by a group consisting of 7 members, who were active in the field, while two other people are the ones who ordered and paid Fatmir Hysenin to carry out the execution. In the investigation file, it is emphasized that the order of the murder are the brothers Leonard and Erlis Duka. While the group that worked for them and participated with different roles in the murder of Santiago Malko, are: Ilir Selmani, Oltian Loga, Dritan Agaj, Aleksandër Maxhak, Xhoni Nica, Fatmir Hyseni and Blendi Teta.

After Malko's murder, the attack on Ervis Martinaj's people continued until 2022. On November 13, 2021, his friend, Erigers Mihasi, was executed. He was driving in the "Astiri" area, together with Armando Duman, when he was shot with Kalashnikovs from another car. Armando Dumani also lost his life from the shooting. Mihasi was also close friends with ex-policeman Santiago Malko. The double murder still remains unsolved.

Almost a month later, on December 23, 2021, Can Kariçi, another Martinaj man, was shot with a silenced firearm inside a car with foreign license plates. The event took place in Kodër-Kamëz, while the perpetrators have not yet been found. Kariçi had previous criminal records and had been convicted for an injury that occurred in Tirana in 2018.

On May 17, 2022, 29-year-old Ulvi Skana disappeared without a trace. The family members filed a complaint and the Police launched an investigation into his abduction. It has been hinted in the media that he was a close friend of Can Kariç and an acquaintance of Martinaj, but his mother, Thëlleza Skana, has denied in media appearances that her son is part of the people of the gambling boss.

In the end, the heaviest blow for Ervis Martinaj occurs. On July 17, 2022, his cousin, at the same time his closest person, Brilant Marrinaj, is killed. He was executed in an assassination attempt at the Fushë-Kruja overpass. The perpetrators fired volleys at Kalashnvikov towards the car in which Brilant Martinaj, Dikler Vata and Besmir Hoxha were traveling. Vata got out of the vehicle, but was executed by bullets, while the other two were burned inside the car.

In the end, another file was opened for him. The Special Court, with decision no. 42, dated May 17, 2022, imposed on Ervis Martinaj the measure of personal security "arrest in prison" for 4 criminal offenses, one of which, a structured criminal group.

The repentant justice, Nuredin Dumani, also mentioned him as the person who had ordered the murder. Duman testified that Ervis Martinaj had offered up to 500,000 euros for the murder of Endri Dokles.

Although he was declared wanted by SPAK, Martinaj was never found. Police officer Jeton Lami, who was suspected of helping him to escape, was arrested instead. Lam was sentenced to 2 years and 10 months in prison, but he has already completed his sentence and is free.

At the time when the Police were looking for him to arrest him, on August 10, 2022, his uncle, Faik Martinaj, filed a criminal report at the Kurbin Police Station. But today, 21 months after his disappearance, and with three murders in Albania and Greece, where his enemies were the target of assassinations, Ervis Martinaj appears again on the scene, although not physically. There is still nothing official about his fate.
