Following the suspension of the process for electing the Director General of Albanian Radio Television, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in Albania has reacted.
Through a post on social media, the OSCE Presence calls for a transparent process during the selection of the director.
The organization announces that it is awaiting the decisions that will be made during the hearing session that will take place on Monday, for the competition for the new director of RTSH.
"The OSCE Presence in Albania joins the cross-party support, the Journalists' Association, SCIDEV-Center and Safe Journalists in welcoming the decision of the RTSH to suspend the process of selecting the Director General. We call for a transparent, merit-based process that ensures fairness and accountability, and we look forward to Monday's hearing," the statement said.
The European Union Ambassador to Albania, Silvio Gonzato, also reacted to this event, calling the suspension of the competition the right decision. Through a post on social media, Gonzato also called for a transparent process.
"The right decision. At a time when we open the platform for promoting freedom of expression in Albania through open dialogue, we must build trust and ensure transparency," Gonzato said.
The race to elect the new director of Albanian Radio Television was shrouded in accusations of illegality, after the Steering Council decided by majority vote to disqualify 8 out of 10 candidates on the grounds that they did not meet the qualification criteria.
After the vote, only the director appointed after Alfred Peza's resignation, Aurora Polo, and the director of RTSH in Shkodra, Jetmir Shpuza, remained in the race. All others were disqualified!
At the meeting, in violation of the law on audiovisual media and the statute of Albanian Radio Television, the members of the Council conducted a vote without discussing the criteria that the participating candidates met, or did not meet.
Another problem is related to the fact that one of the members was not present at the meeting at all. He voted from Vietnam, breaking the key rule, that of secret voting.
5 months after Alfred Peza's resignation, Albanian Radio Television still does not have a director. Since Peza's departure, Aurora Polo has been appointed acting director of Albanian Radio Television.
Upon opening the race, each of the candidates was supposed to answer questions from members, but this did not happen.
If in the first three rounds, his election is not achieved by an absolute majority, in the fourth round, he can be elected by a simple majority.
In cases where this is not achieved either, then the RTSH Steering Council will have to be dissolved, a formula that is also used with Parliament when it fails to elect the President.
