Diplomat Arben Cici , who was director of the cabinet of the President of the Republic when Anastasi obtained Albanian citizenship, recounted his first meeting with the archbishop in 1996.
He told News24 that when he first met her, she seemed like an angel.
" When I first met him, he seemed like an angel to me. His ringing voice was unique in the church. He had a sweet, gentle voice that seemed to penetrate your entire body and he had the special patience to listen to you until the end, and this impressed me in those turbulent times in Albania," said Cici.
The diplomat also indicated that in 1997, when Albania was embroiled in unrest, the archbishop chose to remain in Albania, even though there had been requests to return to Athens.
"Don't forget that the archbishop did not leave Albania in 1997, at a time when all travel was suspended. There were requests to return to Athens, but he said he would stay here. But what I remember is that I met him before the Orthodox Church issued the strong and powerful message that for peace, put aside your weapons and let's all unite as brothers ," the diplomat confessed.
Cici : I met him early in '96 and I don't forget that at that time I was the director of the cabinet at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and at that time I was asked indirectly how we should address these church authorities who have come to Albania? What is the correct way to address them? When I told you about the archbishop, His Beatitude, they were surprised.
Again in 1997 there was a problem, not with the archbishop, but with where he worked. Don't forget that the archbishop did not leave Albania in 1997, at a time when all travel was suspended. There were requests to return to Athens, but he said he would stay here.
But what I remember is that I met him before the Orthodox Church issued the strong and powerful message that for peace, put your weapons aside and let's all unite as brothers.
This is the message that the Orthodox Church, the archbishop, gave at that time, in the turbulent year that has left bad marks on our memory and on the image of Albania.
