Bakeries in Berat increase employee salaries, warn of rising bread prices

Labor shortages are adding costs to bread producers as well.

Since September last year, due to the lack of workers, many bakeries in the country have been forced to increase wages by up to 80%, in order to retain professionals. Wage increases have made the situation difficult for some bakeries, which have announced the first increases in bread prices.

In Berat, a bakery has announced that from April 1, bread prices will increase from 10 to 20 lek, due to the increase in wages and difficulties in finding employees.

The chairman of the Association of Bread, Confectionery and Pastry Producers, Gëzim Peshkopia, told Monitor that the increase in prices is individual, while adding that there is no increase in the price of mass bread in the entire market.

The bishopric also underlined that the lack of labor, especially in the districts, is also present for bread producers.

According to him, in order to maintain the current workforce, bakeries across the country have occasionally increased employee wages since September of last year. The head of the association emphasizes that since last year salaries have increased by 20 to 80%.

"Due to the departure of the population to keep the positions of professionals, the bakeries have increased the salaries of the employees, bringing them to the level of over 50,000 ALL per month. Salaries for saleswomen and bakers have increased by 20 to 50%.

For the position of the baker, who is the most key worker, salaries vary from 60,000 Lek to 100,000 Lek per month. The highest increase has been for cleaning workers at the level of 70 to 80%, as it is very difficult to find cleaning workers", said Mr. Bishopric.

Currently, the price of mass bread is 100 ALL. For the period 2021-2022, the price of mass bread increased 3 times in a row with a total increase of 71.4%. The first tightening started in September 2021, where the price of mass bread increased from 70 Lek to 80 Lek (14% increase).

In the middle of March 2022, the price of bread increased again, reaching 100 ALL (25% increase). While in some districts, such as Korça, Pogradeci, Gjirokastra or Saranda, due to the increase in the cost of transporting flour from fuel, the price of bread reached 120 ALL.
