A rare species, called the brown whistling (Phylloscopus fuscatus), was discovered in the last few days in the lagoon of Orikum.

The news was announced by the Ornithological Society of Albania (AOS), which emphasized that "this is again a new species for Albania, which was caught in the reeds of Orikum".

The Siberian Whistler is a small bird with a relatively simple appearance. Its plumage is brown to gray with some dark green tints on the back. The ventral and gill feathers are pale and slightly brown on the sides.

Compared to the Lesser Whistler, the Siberian Whistler is paler in color and lacks shades of yellow and green, giving it a "cold" appearance.

The distribution of the Siberian Whistler during the breeding season includes Northern and Central Siberia, while during the winter season, it migrates to South Asia, including India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Burma, as well as parts of the Arabian Peninsula. The Siberian Whistler is also a visitor to Europe, where in recent years its sightings have become even more frequent.

Like the gray heron, which was caught in Orikum a few days ago, the Siberian whistler may have traveled a distance of approximately 3,300 to 8,300 kilometers.

"Such surveys highlight the importance of habitats, such as the Orikum reeds, for birds. They provide migratory species with shelter and food, thus supporting entire populations of birds from distant nesting sites. Bird ringing in these habitats allows us to record species that might otherwise go unnoticed. Also through ringing, we get important data on migration routes and cycles, population dynamics and the health of these ecosystems", AOS emphasized in a post on social networks.

The Ornithological Station of Orikum, which has been run by Albanian and Hungarian ornithologists since 2019 as part of a long-term monitoring project, has already registered 4 new species for Albania.
