Eurojust published this Wednesday details of a joint operation between Italian and Albanian authorities against organized crime groups involved in international drug trafficking and money laundering.
During the joint operation conducted on May 26 in Italy and Albania, 12 people were arrested, while three others received official summonses from the authorities. The investigations are also related to a serious murder that occurred in May 2025 in the Bari region, Italy.
According to Italian authorities, a conflict in a bar in the Bari area degenerated into the kidnapping and brutal murder of a person in an isolated cave in the Upper Murgia area. Investigations revealed that the incident was linked to drug trafficking activities run by an Albanian national.
Meanwhile, Italian and Albanian investigators identified a structured criminal group operating in international drug trafficking and money laundering. According to the investigative file, around 1 million euros in proceeds from criminal activities were transferred from Italy to Albania through a criminal network based in Tirana.
The operation was carried out within the framework of a joint investigation team (JIT), created with the support of Eurojust between the Bari Prosecutor's Office and the Special Structure Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK).
Authorities say 15 people have been charged with serious crimes, including:
-premeditated murder using mafia methods,
-drug trafficking,
-extortion attempts,
-unlicensed possession of weapons,
-money laundering,
-as well as support for perpetrators of crime.
This is the fifth joint investigative team between Italy and Albania during the years 2018–2026 to fight against Albanian criminal organizations operating in the international trafficking of cocaine and heroin.
According to Eurojust, cooperation between Albanian and Italian authorities has so far led to: more than 170 arrests, the seizure of over 7 tons of drugs, as well as sentences of up to 20 years in prison for people involved in criminal networks.
The operation was attended by: the Bari Prosecutor's Office and the Anti-Mafia Directorate in Italy, SPAK, the Albanian State Police, as well as specialized Italian and Albanian investigative structures.
