Police in the UK have uncovered a massive cannabis cultivation scheme disguised as a real estate agency.

It was the British citizen, 63-year-old Jeremy Southgate who bought properties in Hull and then turned them into farms where cannabis was grown.

He drew up "phantom tenant" agreements and even opened a property shop on Neëland Avenue with false advertisements of a real estate agency.erg4g3433

Detectives estimated the drug operation was making £11.4m a year.

Humberside Police said the investigation began when a search of a property owned by Southgate turned up £74,000 worth of cannabis plants.

Officers began surveillance of the estate agent owned by Jeremy Southgate and managed by Albanian Florjan Kasaj.

The operation raided 15 properties across the city and uncovered thousands of cannabis plants, cultivation equipment and cash.

It was also revealed that Southgate had won government grants to install insulation around every building to stop drugs being detected.

More than £50,000 was also found inside Southgate's boat docked at Hull Marina.

Police said the drug factories were staffed by illegal immigrants from Albania.

Southgate was found guilty of two counts of conspiracy to manufacture Class B drugs, money laundering, two counts of fraud by false representation and was jailed for 11 years after a trial at Hull Crown Court.

Dardan Mrishaj , 37, of Duesbery Court in Hull, was found guilty of two counts of conspiracy to manufacture class B drugs and was jailed for three years.

A fifth man, Enver Rrushi , 33, of Passfield Crescent, Middlesbrough, pleaded guilty to two counts of producing cannabis and was jailed for three years.

Police said 10 other people were also charged with drug-related offenses between 2018 and 2023 as part of the investigation and have since been convicted.

"This investigation and disruption of the organized crime group was long and complex, but it was only a matter of time before our specialist trained officers dismantled this criminal network," said the prosecutor.

By stopping the activities of this gang, we have prevented significant amounts of Class B drugs from flooding our streets," she concluded.
