It will be underground/ The construction of the archaeological museum in Tirana,
Archaeological Museum

The Council of Ministers has decided that the new Archaeological Museum in Tirana will be located above ground. It has also decided to build an underground parking lot.

By entrusting the Albanian Development Fund with carrying out the procedures and the Ministry of Culture (among others) with concluding cooperation agreements, the decision leaves unclear what happens to the Albanological institutes, whose offices are in Mother Teresa Square, above the current archaeological museum, and next to an underground parking lot of the Tirana municipality.

The Albanological Institutes became subordinate to the Academy of Sciences with the reform of recent years.

Although the Academy had promised protection for them, the Council of Ministers has excluded the Academy of Sciences from the process, bringing the Ministry of Culture into play and exposing the shadows of its avoidance as an authority, which speaks volumes about the reform itself and the fate of Albanological institutes. The very initiative for a new museum highlights old problems, of space for scientific workers.

Researcher Afrim Krasniqi has also reacted to this issue.

"Retrospective, mid-2000s. A well-known person knocked on one of the highest state offices. He was in a big mess. The municipality had asked him for his private apartment to demolish in exchange for compensation. He refused. Then a well-known oligarch came to him with the municipality and asked for his house to be demolished for the construction of a palace. He refused. Then they sent the municipal police and IKMT to threaten him with fines. He refused. Then one day an envelope came under his door: "Your apartment will be demolished without compensation for the public good. According to the French project, the land there is planned to be a public garden." He took the letter and was looking for a solution, which he did not find. He was forced to compromise and of course the oligarch won. Otherwise, he would continue to have the municipality, the police, IKMT, the French plan, the oligarch and the state behind him face to face every day, etc., etc.

This story came to mind as I read the latest government decision. It is related to the building where the Albanology department and the rectorate of the University of Tirana are located. Once, one of the oligarchs came there and demanded the closure of the museum. It was a very good environment for a disco or entertainment, he said. He was refused. Then the major reforms began...about half a million euros for a bookstore without readers or a book concept in the circle of the square and now we are in the final phase, where the new (non-French) plan foresees an underground parking lot, and somewhere there an underground museum. The ministry and the ADF are in charge, - the site says.

Albanology? The foundation, the researchers, the institutes? They don't matter. We live in a time when tall towers and concrete with VKM are the trend; it is not the time for knowledge, books, publications, studies, or scientists and professors who are not (yet) in the "right direction" of history! "Anything can happen, we live in Tirana!" was the warning refrain on the road to power, " Krasniqi writes on social networks.
